I'm a socialist but I'm in a centre left liberal nationalist party that has won election after election while standing up for migrants. Everyone knows about Denmark but Scotland is little-studied or treated as some kind of curiosity.

It's really simple, people respect clarity, honesty, and strength

The Home Secretary decided to post through it
Green MP Carla Denyer accuses Shabana Mahmood of trying to "out Reform Reform" and says "toxic racist narratives and the scapegoating of migrants" are to blame for "tearing our country apart" not migrants.

Mahmood: "I couldn't care less what any other political party has to say about these matters"

not to sound like a fundamentalist here but you ever wonder if these people ever imagine standing before the Divine and justifying their actions
I suspect the line about cars, e bikes, &c points not just to attacking people applying from temporary work visas, but more generally to a future migration crisis stemming from a major European war.

An answer that's not only unsatisfactory but barely even human
Asked if Keir Starmer believes British people want to "see refugee children pulled out of school and deported after 10 years in this country”, his spokesman says that “what the British public wants and what this government was elected on a mandate to deliver was to secure our borders"

The Labour Party aligning itself with Tommy Robinson, fucking hell.

Despicable treachery.
Asked how happy Keir Starmer is that Tommy Robinson is now backing his asylum plans, his spokesman replies that "the public can tell that the pace and scale of illegal immigration is out of control..."

"We must restore order... or we will lose public consent for giving refuge at all".

imagine if Nick Griffin had proposed in 2010 that we should be stealing jewellery from refugees who arrive here, we’d have spent 15 years pointing to it as a low point in the political discourse around immigration, but now we’re just suppose to accept it from our “””centre-left””” government

the political culture of britain is that of the schoolyard, and this is not just all the public schoolboys around but seemingly a whole cultural fascination with the bully: see a bully, don't call him out or stand up to him, toady up to him, then try to out-bully him

Doesn’t matter. “Starmer and Mahmood wanted to take jewellery from asylum seekers” is a mark those two will never be able to wash off and which the party as a whole will have to put in onerous work to remove.
My guess is they will end up u-turning on the jewellery thing (you can already see it being softening in interviews) and possibly the 20 years (which is way longer than Denmark).

UK politics weirdness about class isn't limited to the centre, it must be said; it's not just Labour chasing a vision of the working class that doesn't exist and hasn't for decades, it's non-Green Capital L left as well. Every time I see railing against Green parties for not having a class basis...

why do I emphasize the Manchester-ness of this? because Blue Labour 'thinkers' try to portray themselves as authentic representatives of a neglected Northern working class. But while there's plenty of racism in the North, as anywhere else, there's also a long history of integration and anti-racism.

Ultimately the vision of britain that starmer has is profoundly cynical, nasty and just not true. He thinks that abidicating his responsibility in showing that another option is maturity and doing the difficult thing, but he's literally just creating the hateful country he is so afraid of

Very "I will accept this racism and xenophobia as long as it's wearing my team's jersey" vibes from the Labour Party today.
Today is not the day to argue "oh so you want Reform to win then" as an argument for Labour's indefensible and inhumane anti-asylum policies. At least be honest and own that you're defending racist policies promoted with genuinely far right talking points. Don't try and pretend this is "progressive"

The last sentence is an interesting moment in the English language. Of course it's true that these articles hinder the removal of asylum seekers, much like making murder illegal hinders people who want to kill people.
There is no difference in practice between removing rights of individuals and leaving the ECHR. The end outcome is still the same, people lose rights. If human rights are an obstacle to your policy it is not the rights which are the issue, it is your policy. Labour going full Reform at this stage.

Scotland has had a go at solving one issue with another - we've got a huge problem with people leaving the islands for the mainland, so we placed some refugees on Bute. It went well! They don't want to leave and we want them to stay, even if Syria is safer now!

'We can finally return to Syria, but this island is our home'
For the first time, Syrians fleeing civil war have a chance of returning home. But do those settled on Bute want to?

What is truly pathetic about Labour is that this is all they have got. They have failed so spectacularly already, despite a whacking great majority, to even attempt to govern positively that all they have is punching down on marginalised groups and saying "oh but Reform will be worse".
