Incredible piece about some of Salem's inner workings. Though none of this is surprising, it's wonderful to see a spotlight on it.
Salem, Oregon, has always been a prison town. But late last year, city leaders were confronted with what to do when formerly incarcerated people want to join civic life.

@thewesternedge.bsky.social has uncovered how a series of backroom deals and a smear campaign roiled the city for weeks.
Is Redemption Possible in Oregon's Capital City?
The Western Edge uncovered a manufactured crisis, backroom deals, political spending, AI slop and a city council bending to appease a police union.

It’s half time, and that means it’s time for one of America’s most enduring and beloved traditions: mediocre white people being unproductively furious at having to notice brown people

Vasquez? Have a plan?! To hold cops accountable?!?!

Zero chance that guy is capable of doing anything requiring a spine or actually helping the public. Might makes right with the likes of him. We're the prey.
Mayor Wilson has now indicated he will expedite the rule making process for the Detention Facility Impact Fee. I am grateful for that.

We also need District Attorney Nathan Vasquez to outline how he plans to hold ICE agents accountable for the unlawful use of tear gas against a group of families.
I recorded this today, in Portland, Oregon, at a huge march to the ICE facility in SW. The crowd was full of cyclists who had ridden there in memory of Alex Pretti; members of several labor unions; and ordinary citizens of every age, including this little girl. So of course ICE deployed tear gas.

May this gain traction.
Kristi Noem and her department’s latest attempt to mislead the American public regarding the brutal and unjustified killing of Alex Pretti is deeply shameful, and she must be impeached and removed from office immediately.

Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

Tbh, same.
I will immediately resign from my corporate gig and take the attendant pay cut if a future D POTUS offers me a DOJ spot persecuting members of this Administration
Honestly a federal commission with prosecutorial authority paired with stripping immunity from ICE officers would be a huge wombo combo

I can't put into words the feeling of watching our government, a hive of evil antisocial filth, the absolute worst humanity has to offer, colliding with the best. Ordinary people trying to help each other, risking everything to stand up for what's plainly, unambiguously fair and right. It's unreal

Fuck these chuds. Scum. Filth. The lot of them.
Bovino shamelessly lies: "This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement"

I liked the Kavanaugh that was into boofing out of Squeed. Much cooler than the Kavanaugh that paved the way for this shit.
How much more in your face can it be?

"Why are you asking me for my paperwork?"
"Because of your accent."
"You have an accent too."
"Where were you born sir?"
"Where were you born at?"
"Put your hands behind your back."

Show up and outnumber the chuds and they start acting less chud-like.

Really interesting article
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

I think this is such an important distinction & reminder

like I don't owe any allegiance to the systems and structures and the machinery of power, but there are fucking beautiful extraordinary amazing people in every corner of this country and to whatever degree I'm "patriotic" it's loyalty to them

Cretins. The lot of them.
Apparently ICE goons in multi-car caravans are circling Spanish immersion preschools in the city taunting and photographing the parents and neighbors who are patrolling the school perimeter to keep kids safe.
