it is impossible for mayors or cops to learn positive lessons about protest response because they all have two immovable beliefs:
1. it is evil and childish to hold police officers accountable for violent acts
2. cops must be present at all times during protests

The lesson Frey and Walz were supposed to learn in 2020 was that sending riot police to a peaceful protest creates a confrontation that results in some dipshit cops shooting people in the eye with a gas canister which then we have to goddamn pay for in settlements while also our city burns.

Absolutely! Since the 70s, the upper Midwest has been home to a number of immigrant & refugee communities-Minneapolis's Somali community, Hmong communities in MN and WI, and Bosnians in IA, etc. Dearborn, MI, is majority Arab-American. The region has a rich immigration history!
I get that folks think this kind of stuff is a clever point, or some kind of signal of savvy, but it grates to see people continually equate Minnesota as a place that is somehow not involved with immigration. Minnesota has a vibrant array of new Americans! It’s why the state is being attacked!

ICE only has about 20-30,000 employees nationwide. Including desk jobs so there's even fewer armed. It's smaller than the NYPD.
There's a reason they do their mega raids on one or two cities at a time, and it's not optics. It's because that's all the dudes they've got.

This morning in Minneapolis, an ICE vehicle got stuck on an icy hill in a residential neighborhood. Agents had to push the vehicles out, some almost slipping in the ice themselves.

Last year when I wrote about prison staff jumping ship for ICE, I reported that BOP had lost a net of at least 1400 employees by late fall.
I just got new data showing they lost a net of ~1700 by mid-December -- though w/EOY retirements the final 2025 figures will likely be higher.
