Thinking how Garbage Day posits Bluesky as a bunch of Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook posters clashing in the Discover feed and it's SO true. Every day I post furry porn like it's Tumblr, and it's just one click away from blasting into an unsuspecting Facebook dad

Super smart year-end take from @bumas.bsky.social: 2025's biggest trend was 2015. Everyone decided this year to take a mulligan on the entire last decade.

I know there's some indie media folks on here that might be curious to know this: Our massive September post that did 600,000 views net us about 1,600 email signups and 76 paid conversions. Good, sure, but further proof that chasing viral traffic is just not a sustainable business model for us
This year was a big one for Garbage Day. We published our most-read post ever in September, which racked up around 600,000 total views. Here's how that happened.

In college, I once brown-bagged a Sparks on the Times Square Toys R Us Ferris wheel. Didn't know it at the time, but I was living through the peak of the American experiment. Everything was ugly and everyone was miserable. I would give anything to go back.
seeing all the gen z nostalgia about hipster brooklyn and let me tell you: i was at the les savy fav "inches" release show in a brooklyn warehouse with q and not u and el guapo in 2004. it was sponsored for some reason by Sparks. and i hated being alive more than anything

It’s hard to imagine a better metaphor for late-stage Silicon Valley: Pay us a cut to imagine the future for us. An industry completely devoid of new ideas asking users to gamble on what might happen next.

So I covered the spread of COVID on Chinese social media in late 2019 into early 2020. And it really does feel a lot like that again, but instead of tracking mentions of the spread of a dangerous virus it's, uh, a complete economic collapse...

This is honestly a pretty Bluesky-specific problem. It is deathly serious in here at all times and I'll be honest, looking at Bluesky regularly is making me a worse, more hysterical writer, causing my non-Bluesky readers to tune out, and it's just making me an unhappier person.
And it may not just be limited to Bluesky, it seems like this is taking over much of online. Feels like @maxread.info or @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social could go long on the problem.

Gen Z internet is having a meltdown this week. One group is raging over a cute photo of someone's living room, another is mad that pop girlies weren't on Pitchfork's best of 2025 lists. Both meltdowns are linked to something I'm calling "offline shock."

I'm sorry I fucking hate the fact I have to deal with short-form video platforms. TikTok blocked my video about the Nazi content spreading across their own platform. Fine to make as many Charlie Kirk Sonnenrad brainrot videos as you want but it's apparently a problem to talk about it!!
December 2, 2025 at 1:30 AM
Ironic memes about the "We Are Charlie Kirk" song, Kirk faceswaps, and Nazi occulist brainrot have collided on TikTok and things are getting very, very dark very, very fast. Your kids are watching nazislop on TikTok.

I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.
