This might be slightly premature to say, but I think the death of Charlie Kirk — and Trump World’s subsequent forced national observance of grief — is having the opposite effect of what I initially thought. If you had asked me in September what would happen, I would have said that Kirk’s murder was the American Reichstag fire, the moment the Trump administration and its great and powerful cyber army would finally conquer the information landscape and complete their authoritarian crackdown on free speech. And a bit of that happened, sure, there was harassment, and doxxing, and people lost their jobs for insensitive posts about Kirk. But it didn’t last. Only a few months later, there is no bigger joke on the internet than Charlie Kirk. Every feed is full of Kirkified slop and AI brainrot mercilessly making fun of MAGA’s martyred influencer. The tail of history is long and these things always evolve, but, as it stands currently, Kirk is the Harambe of the 2020s and MAGA has never felt more cringe, old, and worst of all, boring.

If you’re looking for the Big Trend of 2025, it’s clear everywhere you look. Everyone wants to go back to 2015. Before Facebook’s original pivot to video more or less destroyed the entire media industry, for the sake of fake numbers, and took American monoculture with it. Before Vine shut down in 2016 and drove people to TikTok, back when it was still Musical.ly. Before the pandemic made the internet feel more important than real life. Before Elon Musk bought Twitter and turned it into X. Before you there were three Twitter clones (soon to be four) and three TikTok clones you had to use to understand what people were talking about online. Before you had to talk to a chatbot to get decent Google search results. Before the tech billionaires — captains of industry, culture, and, now, geopolitics — learned how uncool they are and, worse, how uncool the platforms and services they run have become.

I know there's some indie media folks on here that might be curious to know this: Our massive September post that did 600,000 views net us about 1,600 email signups and 76 paid conversions. Good, sure, but further proof that chasing viral traffic is just not a sustainable business model for us

In college, I once brown-bagged a Sparks on the Times Square Toys R Us Ferris wheel. Didn't know it at the time, but I was living through the peak of the American experiment. Everything was ugly and everyone was miserable. I would give anything to go back.

Morals aside, these prediction markets are the dream of the post-COVID NFT mania. Unlike the NFT frenzy, though, they aren’t trying to turn JPGs into digital assets, they’re trying to commodify our opinions. But yes, crypto is involved here. Kalshi is a traditional betting market, but is launching a bridge to the Solana blockchain ecosystem soon. Polymarket runs on the Polygon blockchain and pays out in the USDC stablecoin. And just like the early 2020s crypto boom, there is an entire ecosystem of influencers that want to convince you to buy in. Kalshi has a whole army of users that post their wins to X and even livestream them. And 60 Minutes did an interview last week with a Polymarket user that goes by Domer, a former professional poker player, who has made around $3 million last year. Polymarket also seems to have quietly acquired the @NewsWire_US X account, which has more than 120,000 followers and now links to the platform’s “breaking news” tab. “Kalshi versus Polymarket is the first time we’ve seen armies of loosely affiliated paid influencers battling on behalf of their companies,” Neeraj Agrawal, the communications director for crypto nonprofit Coin Center, wrote on X last week.

This is honestly a pretty Bluesky-specific problem. It is deathly serious in here at all times and I'll be honest, looking at Bluesky regularly is making me a worse, more hysterical writer, causing my non-Bluesky readers to tune out, and it's just making me an unhappier person.

I'm sorry I fucking hate the fact I have to deal with short-form video platforms. TikTok blocked my video about the Nazi content spreading across their own platform. Fine to make as many Charlie Kirk Sonnenrad brainrot videos as you want but it's apparently a problem to talk about it!!

I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.
