There are absolute sickos (complimentary, mostly) in the Eurovision fandom who not only do full rankings for the songs in the main contest but also national finals, or historical contests before they started watching, etc. To me it just sounds like so much work, but it's a whole thing.

Texas has been aiming to have zero deaths on its roadways for as long as I remember.

I wondered if we'd ever gotten close.

Nope turns out it's 10 or so people a day like clockwork.

We haven't had a death free day since before George W Bush got elected president.
It's a classically American thing to say, "But can we really afford to make cars safer?"

Again, many Americans have decided that 40,000 roadway deaths a year is fine and dandy.

At 10 over 75? Non-zero chance his 'trial' is a note read aloud next to a burn pit.

You know the joke that in some extreme circumstances you 'stop being biology and start being physics'?

There is a point where your politics stop being law and start being history. It is not a good place to be.

NEW: AI โ€œrecipe slopโ€ is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Googleโ€™s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes โ€” collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

In this alternate universe, Japan attacks USA in Dec 1940 instead of 1941. The death of the Red trains and the H (Sacramento St), K (College Ave) and G (Westbrae) Key train does not happen in 1941 and serves out the war. AC Transit buys the train lines before their death in 1958

You, foolish: playing EU5, staring at maps, worrying about tax base

Me, enlightened: staring at a tax base map for IRL

(The difference between the Main Line and, say, Upper Darby will not be surprising.)
๐Ÿ”Ž We used the results to make an interactive web map that allows people to look up how the property wealth in their own metro area (or any other) is fragmented across different local municipalities. This tool visualizes tax base fragmentation across the USโ€”check it out: www.taxbasefragmentation.net

Living in the US in 2025: The government that hates green tech says your e-bike battery might explode if it gets wet, but the company says, nuh uh, only if it gets REALLY wet. And now you, a person who needs their e-bike and also doesn't want their house to burn down, has to figure out what to do.

San Francisco has over 1,100 EV charging ports, but zero electric wheelchair charging stations, a 2024 report found.

Advocates are frustrated by the contrast, and say the cityโ€™s slow progress has left many wheelchair users behind.

S.F. has zero electric-wheelchair charging stations. Users are frustrated.
Electric wheelchair users are used to keeping a mental map of where to charge their chairs. The city hasn't done enough to help, they say.

FINLAND IS NOT RE-GAUGING ITS RAILWAYS

Just because an urbanist influencer has posted a 6 months old piece (that was anyway inaccurate) about it does not mean it is happening!

Finland *might* lay some additional standard gauge track from Sweden to Oulu

This was such a fun photo to set up, taken by Thomas Reiter through a sleep station window on Mir. The sun was so bright we were all squinting like crazy. But I love how it shows the texture of the Shuttle's rough, protective hide, and the glimpse of humanity (and my moustache) against the universe.
