Lmao I must regretfully concede that on occasion Piers Morgan gets someone’s ass

Also, I think if you are going to have someone like Fuentes on you are obliged to conduct the interview in Classic British Asshole (laudatory)
PIERS: “You’re not gay?”
FUENTES: “No. But women are very difficult to be around.”
P: “Should they vote?”
F: “No.”
PIERS: “They should stay home?”
FUENTES: “Yeah.”
PIERS: “So you’re just a misogynistic dinosaur. Have you ever had sex?”
FUENTES: “No.”
PIERS: “Wow. Says the guy who never got laid.”

If you've been to a national park lately you know people come in wonder and reverence from all over the world. Wild that the guy who ran on "other countries are laughing at us" is clamping down on the best possible advertising for America.
At least once you get past the border, you can enjoy America's amazing national parks - for an extra $100 per person for foreign visitors in addition to the entry fee.
So if you are a family of four, its a grand for visas, and another $400 for every national park.

I'm always down to clown on FIRE for their selective attention but this isn't a school!

Remember all those people who claimed Obama's IRS was persecuting Christians and their churches?

Where's the outrage from the American Freedom Law Center and Pacific Legal Foundation folks?
I’m sure FIRE will be all over this

Comrade Donald knows how many pencils your child needs better than you do.
Trump: "You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don't need that many. You always need steel. You don't need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. So we're doing things right."

Couldn't agree with this more. I personally work with very few quants and I'm always amazed by how impressed folks are when I make very basic pivot tables. Y'all give me way too much credit lol
I think the toxic current correlation between “studied STEM” and “techbro sociopathy” isn’t really about the subject matter itself but is about how our culture has spent 25 years constantly blowing smoke up the asses of guys who are even passably competent at Computer or Quant
there is not any particularly strong evidence that study of the humanities make people good people. the elites of many brutal empires were extremely well-read!

i wish more people understood this dynamic and how deeply it shapes our info environment. people complain and kvetch about how so many of our most popular pundits are lazy hacks; what is less often acknowledged is that the market is quite clear that this is what most ppl want from opinion journalism
This is one of the main reasons I gave up my columnist positions at Guardian U.S. The incentives made me intellectually lazy.

The thing that bums me out about this is how much of the student loan debate centered around pushing for unilateral executive action on forgiveness rather than pushing for legislative change moving forward. Helping some people out of a burning building without doing anything to try to put it out.

Biden was the best we’re ever going to do on student loans because a very clear lesson there was that there is apparently absolutely no electoral benefit to moving heaven and earth to try and help student debtors

Lower level science classes are either weed-out courses for med-school hopefuls OR specifically tailored to students who won't take another science class.

Most schools have these interdisciplinary classes and we should teach more about the history of science in k-12 rather than truly hard science
Is it too much to ask to get a criminal justice degree without having to also be required to spend $800 to balance chemical equations for some reason? The election valence of Mercury is irrelevant. It’s useful to someone, but it’s not useful to me.

We are in the early innings of people coming to grips with the real cost of building our cities almost exclusively for automobility
LA quietly stopped repaving all streets last July to avoid fulfilling its ADA obligations. The federal govt says when you repave a street, you have to update all the curb ramps. LA has tons of out of date curb ramps, so the rule makes repaving much more expensive. The city's solution: stop repaving!
LA has stopped repaving our streets
The reason why is probably illegal

Another "point" of an educational space (and one the Internet is absolutely attacking) is a time and space in the world for a young person to be free to think rightly ~*and wrongly*~, without risk of the real danger.
And I think the coverage of campus in newspapers (going back to the 60s) has been a damaging campaign against the life of schooling. "You must be free to think rightly and wrongly, and free to appreciate the variousness of the universe undisturbed by its perils."

When cameras are installed, they issue many violations in the first month, followed by a steep decline in the second month. This suggests that the cameras effectively deter speeding by changing underlying driver behavior rather than relying on sustained revenue extraction.

Welcome to America, where someone can be arrested 100 times, have 40 traffic citations, and still be allowed to continue to drive. With deadly results.

She is at fault (allegedly), but also the legal system and culture that allowed this lethal menace back on the roads. Outrageous.

NEW: The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to take up a lawsuit over public library books in the Texas Hill Country, leaving in place a ruling that gives local governments & elected officials wide latitude to ban books & ideas from their shelves. #txlege

Supreme Court lets stand ruling that local officials can remove library books
The order means library patrons will have few, if any, avenues to reverse library-book removals in court.
