this was my old pinned post on Twitter, Fran Lebowitz is one of the best to ever do it, just the clearest and most powerful articulation of my beliefs about the arts and their relationship with criticism i've ever seen from another person

In retrospect, with so many attempts at live-service games flopping, there's something really funny about FromSoftware proving that they had a winning formula for a live-service game with Nightreign, and then refusing to turn it into one. Further still, not even dipping into cosmetic DLC with it.

This week I learned that no one, diverse ages, I spoke to knew that US health care use to be nonprofit legally (prior to Nixon) & a huge shift really occurred in the 90s when the last of the non profits that were trying to stay low as possible had to move to for profit to remain competitive.

there's a versatile Chinese word 油腻 that's hard to translate. the core meaning is oily/greasy, but it can be applied to anything from music, writing, to people. when applied to people, "smarmy" is similar but not exactly the same.
for me 油腻 is the perfect word for describing AI writing

everytime i, as a queer, would get told "don't you care about QUEERS though?" to try and justify ignoring a dem's problems, the question i'd always have is "what makes me so important? compared to the palestinian, the immigrant?"

and we now watch the same people tell queers they gotta just take it.

Five Tiers of RPG Publishing
Hasbro’s annual earnings came out this week, so I took a look. It is truly staggering how much Wizards of the Coast has changed the company since they were acquired; when looking at unadjusted earnings the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Games division was the only one that turned a profit in the entire company. Not only that, but Wizards is responsible for roughly 47% of the entire company’s revenue and over 90% of all revenue growth over the last year.

suspect most of my UK friends have already seen this but just in case
I work with asylum seekers fleeing persecution for being LGBTQ+ and see first hand the damage our existing dehumanising and degrading asylum system already does to people in crisis. The proposed changes make things even worse. Please consider completing this consultation before it closes tomorrow.
PS. Not too late to tell the government what you think about their proposed changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain - the public consultation is open until 12th Feb.

the industry is already snuffling around for ways to make indie dev every bit as exploitative but AAA gamedev really deserves to die out
there is absolutely no way that management laid off "most" of the devs that made a game two weeks after it came out, unless they were already planning to kill off the game before it launched

which means they maliciously lied to their own employees for months, if not years
What the hell are we even doing here:

Lovecraft deprecated the increasing breast size of the women on WEIRD TALES covers, his wife Sonia was often described as "Juno-esque," and his letters also suggest he disliked fat women (based on his reaction to neolithic fertility idols).

Evidence suggests he liked women a bit thicc, but not bbw.

honestly i almost never see "lived experience" deployed as anything but an excuse for why understanding other people is impossible and you shouldn't bother trying. it describes something that does exist but which is completely trivial if you don't go on to establish shared points of reference
This is key, and why relying on "lived experience" of these products is misguided & dangerous. We should listen to people's lived experience of oppression in healthcare, & of what their needs are. But that does not mean taking people's impressions of the cognitive hazard machine at face value
an LLM is effectively hijacking those cues.

people *feel* like it's listening.
it is not listening; it is a statistical word model.

people *feel* like it's paying attention.
it is not paying attention; it has no attention to pay.

it tricks them into trusting the output
