this was my old pinned post on Twitter, Fran Lebowitz is one of the best to ever do it, just the clearest and most powerful articulation of my beliefs about the arts and their relationship with criticism i've ever seen from another person

To me a sentimentalist is someone who's unquestioningly working within a received idea of "the good," which is why I find a lot of "dark"/"transgressive"/"bleak" etc works to be basically sentimental in the negative space of what they depict as "bad"

i got hit in the eye with a fleck of cat litter the other day, and it's either bruised and physically irritated (hopefully), i caught an infection from the litter, or possibly it's completely unrelated and i caught pinkeye from a client/their kid or something

the confederacy had ONE good idea, and it was that dueling your political rivals in Congress was an appropriate way to express displeasure
I think you actually shouldn’t be able to mouth off to people without consequences. You have to risk something to talk your shit, otherwise you get, well, *waves around hands at everything*

i would simply Read the Rules Myself
To anyone playing boardgames today who, whenever someone starts explaining rules to them, feels themselves leaving their body & entering a kind of psychedelic cut scene where they float through the vast emptiness of space: relax. Breathe. It's like getting a tattoo. Just trust the process.

this is also the fate of every wannabe Hollow Knight
You can see a bunch of indie attempts at Deus Ex, and you can see all the ways they had to cut corners, scope, polish, whatever to make it happen

None have been able to hit that mark, and it's entirely because they just don't have the time/budget it'd take

(because there's no guarantee it'd sell)

look say what you want about parasociality and the commercial crassness of it but this is EXACTLY the kind of headline you'd see in, like, a Star Trek time travel episode about Earth's future history
“Leaving behind over 3 million followers” is a crazy thing to write lol

Treat a published work that was later divulged to be AI-generated the same way you would if you found out it was manually plagiarized from a different book. Same situation, just the plagiarism has been automated and averaged out a bit, and the plagiarist is also a scab and a cultural arsonist.

BRB, becoming a Blowing Bubba Truther and going all in on the conspiracy theory that the reason they haven't released all photos of Bill Clinton in the Epstein files is because one of them includes photographic evidence that Donald Trump did, in fact, blow Bill.
Bill Clinton releasing a statement saying 'release the Epstein files, you cowards' was not on my bingo list.

imo this kind of points back to Paulo Freire, and his idea of a "banking" (sometimes translated as "deposit" or "narrative") model of education where you're just filling someone up with Correct ideas vs. a problem-solving, method-focused mode of education, which is actually liberatory
I know I’m not the first person to say it but the hyper commercialization of the Grinch story is pretty sad and a perfect illustration of the ability of capital to absorb critiques painlessly

none of the nasty things i've ever said about liberalism, not in my most exaggerated shitposting to a small and familiar audience, compare to the shit liberals happily say about themselves
"worker's rights" is not even on the radar of my political priorities why would i care about that

honestly does the talent you would need to make "D&D but good" even exist outside of people already developing their own games

like sure maybe if you backed up a dumptruck of $100 bills to Tom Bloom or Wade Dyer's house you could convince them to work for the devil, but they know what they're worth
I think WotC is unambitious with D&D simply because they have no reason to be, they occupy a strata in the industry where friction largely doesn't exist for them unless they do something terminally clueless like trying to rescind the OGL, they can coast forever on minimal effort, why wouldn't they?

an infuriatingly large portion of the ttrpg playing public are to rpgs what the illiterate are to novels.
no, D&D does not offer equal support to "Thrilling Dungeon Adventures" and "Harvest-Moon-Esque Cozy Socialising", and if you think it does I will treat you like you are terminally stupid.
