I know the first season deserves some grace (Holly Hunter pun intended), but I am looking for SF that takes big swings and imagines worlds that are strange and new (sorry). I probably shouldn't expect that from a Trek-size franchise, even without the ambient fascism permeating the media landscape

Big liberation theology news: the ELN in Colombia is reporting that the remains of guerrilla priest Camilo Torres have been found and identified. They express hope that they'll be moved to the National University, where Torres founded the sociology department.

The gmail migration was honestly effortless. Assuming that downloading what's in my gdrive goes as smoothly as I suspect, in about a month I will be pretty much totally off Google except for e.g. having to interact with other people's Docs
Okay, for those who want to switch Email providers with Gmail degrading daily and think about Fastmail:

damn, there was a time that my OnePlus phone was the first time I ever actually liked a phone rather than tolerating it. this sucks
Never buy a OnePlus phone ever again. They now have a hardware anti-rollback fuse that blows if you revert to an earlier version or install a custom ROM.

I blame this on too many people having a reading of DS9 that just says "See! You thought the federation was all rainbows & Talarian puppies, but there was messy, GRITTY stuff there, man!"

…When the entire point of that show was about finding a way to live federation ideals, THROUGH the grit & mess.
I am (in general) concerned that storytellers in my cluster are taking old, relatively idealistic stories and reframing them as tarnished and nasty under the impression that makes them more meaningful, when impossible dreams have never been more precious in my lifetime.

Now that the White House is using AI to edit photos of their political opponents to create fascist propaganda I’m wondering if anyone could have seen this use of AI coming. Okay I’m hearing lots of people did and they were forced to watch corporations smother the masses with the technology anyways

A lot of scholars are entitled, gate-keeping pricks, but it is also a kind of entitlement to presume that all writing will be perfectly transparent to everyone all the time. You might also have to do some work to read some things, just like the scholars who've dedicated their lives to their subject.
