With all the new people, I should do another intro. I'm a geek, who is owned by a boxer dog called Harley, living in Gloucestershire. I have two and a bit kids, one and a bit of which are found family trans boys who are joyous to have with us. I sew when I have spoons. I have bipolar.

The news that nearly 80% of NHS managers are concerned that their staff face discrimination from patients and the public is very troubling. Staff are now reporting feeling intimidated by the presence of flags, especially when visiting patients in their homes. (1/3)

UCL researchers warn that UK agencies safeguarding science, health and data – that keep government honest – are vulnerable to political interference.

Trump’s America shows they need better protection.

How can we better protect the truth?
The Trump regime is undermining a host of agencies which protect citizens. Could the same happen here? How might we prevent it?

Or read Italian history - the anti-fascist movement and subsequent constituent assembly was made up of the entire non-fascist political spectrum, from catholics to royalists to democrats to liberals to communists
Folks demanding political / ideological purity fail to see that this is no longer a movement belonging to the left / liberals. This is an opposition against fascism. By definition it must be big tent. Failure to grasp this: see divided oppositions in Eastern Europe as your failed examples.

Terrifying.
This is extremely troubling news for those of us who conduct human subjects research.
RFK is undoing human subjects protections so he can conduct placebo trials of vaccines. That means infecting people knowingly. I wonder who will “volunteer” for these trials? If history is any guide, a lot of incarcerated and other powerless people.

Nursing staff work tirelessly to provide the best care for patients, and it is appalling to see that they are being slapped with extortionate parking fines for simply being at work.

The government and NHS trusts must rethink their approach to parking and give nursing staff the respect they deserve.

Today I will be playing valheim. I wrote for hours yesterday and my brain is not.
I say this in all seriousness: as long as you rest it doesn’t matter when you do it. And don’t feel bad if working fewer hours over more days suits you better.

We don’t all conform well to 9-5 Mon-Fri culture.
I say this with all seriousness to all PhD students out there:

Yes you should fucking rest at the weekend.

Worth noting that many apprentiships also include a university qualification, in health especially. Nursing apprenticeship is a bsc in Nursing. Advanced clinical practice is a MSc. It isn't either/or
University education empowers and refines people's critical thinking skills. So its natural that reactionary opinion & reactionary power centres despise universities and are highly motivated to turn the public against them. Can't have large numbers of people thinking critically about the status quo!
'YouGov asked voters for their views after prime minister Keir Starmer recently scrapped the 50 per cent higher education participation target, saying it was not “right for our times”, in favour of a new target encompassing apprenticeships as well.' 1/3

I've opted out. Whilst I am, as a researcher, sympathetic to the damage, I won't be sharing very personal data.
This is disastrous on multiple levels. We already have a high level of mistrust & people opting out of sharing will hit medical research so hard. I’d also hesitate to encourage people to share their protected characteristics data to monitor equality & diversity because of the plausibility of misuse.
US spy-tech giant Palantir is moving into our NHS to handle patient data, the same company with a troubling record of surveillance and deportations.

Our Tech and Data Lead, Duncan, spoke at Hackney Town Hall as Homerton Hospital considers adopting Palantir software.
