I love Skylight Books in Los Angeles and this was my book haul last time I was there: Kaveh Akbar's MARTYR! and Nicole Wong's MAHJONG, which is a how-to guide. Go read some books, people! 🌱 Social media can be fun but unplug a bit and touch grass! Read and play mahjong!

Is Beatrice Venezi’s Appointment Really Based on Merit?
Everywhere you look, politics are seeping into opera. In New York, Metropolitan Opera General Manager Peter Gelb, accompanied onstage by Democratic senator Chuck Schumer, gave a rousing opening-night ...

It is wild to be in Germany watching Americans acting like absolute psychos because they confuse social democracy with communism. Mamdani's economic policy is like the very boring, centrist SPD here or something.

Mamdani's victory wasn't only a repudiation of an old and exhausted political establishment in the city, it was also a triumph over the framing power of the political press, and none more so than the New York Times, whose coverage and editorials worked relentlessly to dampen his appeal.

The White House saying that the California vote is rigged is dangerous stuff and a precursor to what we’ll be seeing next year. America will have elections for years to come — the question is whether you want it to be one that operates like Turkey’s or Russia’s.

🎙️ I was this week's guest on @newlinesmag.bsky.social's podcast — talking about the changing nature of authoritarian attempts at soft power (they're getting much better and more subtle at it), from the arts to sportwashing. Thank you @amiefr.bsky.social for having me on!

All this griping about Shohei not speaking English from Americans who are not from LA miss the point that the Dodgers are partly the Indo-Pacific’s baseball team. Angelenos with their diversity understand that. Sorry not sorry for those who do not. Shohei is massive in Japan, Taiwan, etc.

The thing is if you actually read South African press, a ton of post-apartheid, young, white South Africans are deeply mortified and definitely do not want to be associated with ethno-nationalism and reject MAGA. 🫣

Interesting optics – Trump clearly trying to play up the closeness of the two leaders’ relationship, nodding in agreement as Xi speaks, calling Xi a great leader, whereas Xi is much more subdued, not reciprocating with the bonhomie Trump seems over eager to project.
