MAKE ME BETTER is my forthcoming novel about the horrors of community. It is about cults, wellness, control, and the things we will do to escape grief.

Sometimes it hurts to grow -- but your community believes that you can be made pure.

It comes out in May.

I love criminals because criminals are people, and people are deserving of love. Crime is a construct. Evil is a verb, not a noun.
RE my last repost: "Oh, so you love criminals" is absolutely a misdirect and a trap. And also, if someone says that to me, my answer is yes, in part because there is no difference between the person I am today and the criminal I may become tomorrow.
I got to deliver a talk on the history and legacy of the Hays Code and the Comics Code, contemporary censorship efforts, and the necessity of identifying with criminality. You can watch and read the whole thing here:

You gotta reject the "oh so you love criminals" shit when authoritarians say well he was a bad guy. That's a stupid trap. Either the order applies to everyone or it doesn't. If it applies only at the pleasure of the supreme leader then you do not have a society.

I know this is extremely tangential to the LIST OF REASONS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD NOT USE SUBSTACK

But one of them is that even when you use your own domain with them, when someone shares a link from the Substack app, it points to Substack instead of your name/brand

They don’t respect you, the user!!

My husband and I did it over morning coffee this morning. We will do it over morning coffee every damn day until our Congress reclaims authority and holds this administration accountable.
You don't have to give a big speech. They're counting numbers - seeing how many constituents care enough to call in. Just tell them to impeach for this illegal war. Also, make sure you only call YOUR reps - they don't care about out-of-district calls.

You can do this. It'll just take a minute. 💪

matthew did a thread on why, when you call your representatives & senators, you can make life easier for yourself

your message does NOT have to be elaborate or detailed or polished
(i've just done this a lot — i used to really try to insist on people using much more precise wording, until one day, as I was leaving a podium, a kind MoC pulled me aside and was like "you're making it too complicated, we don't track that level of detail from those calls")

I'm not reading that (because I want to know as little as possible) but this is one of my top three books I'm excited about in 2026 and I already requested it on NetGalley even though I said I wasn't going to request anything on NetGalley...
Wow, so excited to see this LitHub write-up of MAKE ME BETTER on their list of SFF to look forward to in 2026!!

I recorded a game of WE DID START THE FIRE by @morganeilish.bsky.social with @sarahgailey.bsky.social, which you'll hear on the podcast feed, that has not left my brain since it happened. The story went some absolutely WILD directions and ended in a place which really blew me away.
for a more serious question; did you have any play in 2025 that you really had to sit with afterwards? that hit you somewhere that doesn't patch up easy?

SPREAD ME by @sarahgailey.bsky.social was the best book I read this year, hands down. I am begging everyone to read it if they like horror and don't mind explicit sexual content.
We all read some bad books this year. I didn’t finish some and had to write negative reviews here and there. However, what I really want to hear about is the stuff that blew your mind, that made you think, that stayed with you. Tell me about the cool books you loved this year.

Working on this project was one of the highlights of my (Very Rough™️) year. It was an honor, a pleasure, and a point of pride to put out each and every one of these essays.

(And getting to add some of my art to vol 3 on top of everything else was a dream come true.)
