The phrase "professional activist" is functionally meaningless. It's a term that politicians and corporate targets have used for generations to discredit anyone who's effectively challenged them. Anyone who deploys it in earnest to discredit deeply committed people is broadcasting their ignorance.

I read Pinsker's SOONER OR LATER EVERYTHING FALLS INTO THE SEA mid-pandemic and it wrecked me so much that part of me is still beautifully broken, which is obvs a full-throated recommendation for her entire body of work -Amy

As many of you know, I adore sci-fi for so many reasons, but especially because it depicts a world beyond the one we have now.

I talked to @jamesfolta.com at Lit Hub about it late last year but I’m always looking for new recs: lithub.com/congressiona...

Hey everyone!

Huge news! Our trans girl scout list has sold a total of 146,000 boxes as of today!

But MANY trans girl scouts only have 20, 30, 40 boxes sold.

I just resorted our list to put those on the top.

Go get your girl scout cookies and make a trans kid's day!

I have this great Spanish history book about female prisoners of the Franco regime who managed to communicate with each other and anti fascist cells by encoding messages in knitting patterns they shared. The male guards never checked them because it was "just" women's knitting patterns

If you've been thinking about attending @sirensconference.org for great convos about speculative fiction and gender in New Haven in March with a friend, @horbinski.bsky.social and I are selling our memberships at the early bird rate. Drop me a line: sesmith at realsesmith dot com for info.

During this nationwide general strike, we stand in solidarity with our neighbors, our communities, and our fellow readers. Today, no work, no school, no shopping, only caretaking, demands for justice, and the making of better futures. Love to all of you, no matter your form of action today!

And a second early-price registration is also available for #Sirens26! We'll miss you, Andrea!
I'm also still selling my @sirensconference.org registration at the same early bird price as @sesmith.lol! Really sad to be missing Sirens, but I hope you can go!
Who needs a registration for #Sirens26 at the early price? We're going to miss s.e. terribly, but we'd love for one of you to join us!

Still looking for someone who'd love to snag my discounted @sirensconference.org membership. It is genuinely such a fun and cool conference for discussing speculative fiction with fellow readers and thinkers. In New Haven, CT from March 18-22.

Incredibly sad about this but I am unable to attend @sirensconference.org this year. I registered at the early bird price ($299, plus some fees rounded out to $315) and would love to transfer my registration at cost to someone who wants to go. Email me if that's you! How many books do you need to get snowed in? To nurture a community? To build a revolution? A. Lot. Yesterday, we went out to the Connecticut indie bookstore community, made some friends, dropped some #Sirens26 bookmarks, and bought some books for all of the above 🩷

Hey, folks! Anyone looking to come to #Sirens26 and needs a ticket?
Do I know anyone who's interested in going to @sirensconference.org this year? I'm gutted that I won't be able to make it and need to do something with my ticket.

An experienced organizer I really respect once reminded folks "you can't always win, but you can always, always inflict a cost. Those add up."
You cannot match the size and resources of these organizations that are abandoning trans youth and sacrificing trans lives, but you have one advantage they do not: an ability to maintain a relentless focus upon them.

Make it your work, every week, to think about how you can punish them.
December 3, 2025 at 10:21 PM
Yes! We're definitely on the novella-and-cookbook train this month! 🫣 But also, we are not punishing ourselves this year, fam, for not hitting our goals when we're all out here doing the damn best that we can 💖 Cut yourself a guilt break and read what you want, when you want, this month
This is your December reminder that it's absolutely acceptable to try and get to a set annual book goal by cramming in as many novellas and cookbooks as you can find before Christmas swallows you up! #booksky 💙📚

I can't stress enough that you should take every opportunity that comes your way to support your local public libraries. Many of them are currently struggling and are being DEFUNDED. Local action matters on this front. Don't sit back until those libraries are gone before taking ACTION.
