Sometimes it is helpful to remember that there is no making sense of the senseless

it is rational behavior once you realize that the marginal value of a billion and one dollars is actually zero relative to one billion dollars, whereas sexual access to one's subordinates is something they highly value
I also previously thought amoral but rational capitalists used rubes by cynically deploying vicious / silly right wing ideologies. But I now think I underestimated how many true believers there are, some of the previously rational got internet brain poison, and there's been change in who's in power.
i had sincerely thought that sexism was a dying prejudice because, in all honesty, up until 2025 i also sincerely believed on at least some level that powerful capitalists with rational but amoral priorities controlled everything and understood the value women bring to the workforce

In 1977, designer Edith Head--the direct inspiration for Edna Mode from The Incredibles--designed this outfit for Blitzen, a champion Siberian husky owned by Phyllis Castleton of Anchorage. Head was in town for a benefit premiere for the film Airport '77. #alaskahistory #alaska

It became really evident to me during the MeToo moment, when apologists for men accused of sexual misconduct brought out all the lynching metaphors (and became committed champions of due process for a day) - anyone who sees loss of status as equivalent to death will kill to maintain their status.

they did, in fact, take decisive action. in the midst of these hearings congress passed the third enforcement act, called the Ku Klux Klan Act. the grant administration used that authority to virtually eliminate the klan, which did not resurface for another 50 years.
Luckily they took decisive action and the Klan was never a problem after that.

kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

A lot of people are making a big deal about this, but it actually is unironically perfectly normal for doctors to repeatedly give you cognitive exams, even when your keep acing them, as your general health rapidly declines in the six months before you die.
Another cognitive exam…

So this is cool and I want to talk about some other cool shit after this. Jist if you can't watch it, humans can't detect radiation with our senses, but when he puts it in a cloud chamber you can see the radiation because of the cloud chamber and it's very cool.

I started using Free File Fillable Forms, and it really does help me understand how my income is getting taxed.

What *doesn't* help me understand the tax code is tax prep software like TurboTax. The IRS should be allowed to offer tax prep software to everyone.

funny how Jeff Bezos pivoted to " We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets" thinking that would be obviously pro-trump

Good way to start a Monday morning, reading what was said over the police scanners in Philadelphia. Happy day-after the Super bowl for all who celebrate
Just a reminder, that if Philadelphia wins... go to the TRUE after-game show:

Pull up an internet police scanner of the Philly metro area.

NOTHING will stop the downtown celebration/riot. Listening to the police mostly stand to the side and try to stay out of the way is the best entertainment.

The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

In 1907, Congress passed a law that American women lost their citizenship if they married a non-citizen. In 1915, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold this act.

It was changed in 1940, but citizenship was not restored to those women, nor their children.
Some people think the threat doesn't apply to them. But there is nothing you can do to prove you're a citizen to a govt that doesn't want you to be, b/c the way you prove it is by giving them your documents. and then they have your documents.
& that's if they don't change the rules retrospectively.
"threat" is important here, because they don't even have to do it to everyone; they just have to do it to enough people to frighten everyone else into accepting second-class citizenship: "don't make trouble or..." "don't ask for higher wages or..." "don't unionize or..." "don't protest or..."
