I’d like to finish and post more personal stuff. Most of what I do at home is really to learn some new technique or process. I tend to not finish it once I get the “aha” moment.

In the meantime, here’s some lookdev/shading stuff I’ve done for work in the last few years that’s no longer NDA. 🧵

Lisa Bonet was spot on about him, was 100% right to walk away from both shows, and she was vilified to hell and back for it for even daring to leave it all and do something, anything, else
i always found him creepy and some of the ways women were treated on the cosby show, especially the older daughters, was sketchy. also saw him speak in person at college (mom dragged me) and he gave off rancid vibes. and this was *before* the trial

stg my states cursed with him

“Seers” - my latest painting. It was really hard to work with the brush I selected for myself (it has no blending). Nevertheless, I made it.
I hope you’ll like it 🙏

RIP Loren Carpenter (1947-2025), who I just learned passed away on December 21 at the age of 78. He worked for the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Division (where he helped create the Genesis effect for Star Trek 2, and Rescue on Fractalus!). He co-created RenderMan and was chief scientist of Pixar. 🤯

Screaming "wtf" and waiting for a spontaneous uprising is going to discourage you. There won't be a spontaneous uprising. That's just not where the people are at.

Organize for the long term. Build community. Build resilience. Have a strategy for whatever corner of this thing you're working on.

I learned a metric crap-ton of facts about beavers for “Hoppers” but this is one of the most powerful: as a foundation species, re-introducing them to an location can restore an ecosystem virtually overnight.
2025 was mostly garbage, but there were some good moments.

One of my favorites was when a family of beavers built a dam in just a few days, saving the Czech Republic 30 million Czech koruna (US$1.2 million) for a wetland restoration project the government had been planning for 7 years. 🦫 🌿
These eager beavers saved the Czech government $1.2 million
After plans stalled for a new dam in the Czech Republic, eight beavers saved the day seemingly overnight. “At this point, nothing that beavers do surprises me.”

Why are cat trees all so ugly? My kingdom for a cat tree made with design principles from this centuries that isn’t just a shag carpet cylinder with a hole cut in it…

(*My kingdom is meager. Don’t get your hopes up.)

The academic literature is pretty clear: the history of both labor and civil rights movements show that the most effective way to achieve structural change is via supermajority action. In other words, it’s as important to grow your networks and find people who can help grow it as it is to protest.
Frustrating hearing “nobody cares” and “Americans are so disengaged”. It’s a disservice to the many, many activists and orgs who are indeed fighting to make things better. Immediate drastic change would be nice, but it’s the consistent work that actually builds longterm change. Help do that work.

Lemon, it’s January 4th.
Aquarius: It's time to put all the disappointments and misery of 2025 behind you and look forward to 2026, which will have lots of new disappointments and misery in store for you.

It's been nearly three years since it came out and the climax of Nimona still gets me every single time. Words cannot describe how much of a miracle it was that this film got released, how it is, and what it means to me. It's the film Blue Sky deserves to be remembered for.

Great tip
To make blockouts easier, I map out element separation with paintovers before starting the modeling.

I often have a hard time keeping track of elements, and having a map like this to refer to helps break it down into manageable chunks.

The devils bargain for being able to make art and music (and enjoy it) is that we are forced to suffer fear about the future and the horror of bad memories of the past.

Our pets’ strength is that they live in the moment and I try to draw from that whenever I can.

Among a whole slew of other problems, Vance embracing a legal doctrine of “it’s ok to forcibly extradite someone to a country where they’re facing domestic criminal charges” is…not going to end well for Americans.
Vance pushes back and says this was not illegal, arguing "Maduro has multiple indictments in the United States for narcoterrorism. You don't get to avoid justice for drug trafficking in the United States because you live in a palace in Caracas."
