11 years ago today, 12 year old Tamir Rice was gunned down by police officers on Cleveland’s west side.

The officer shot him within seconds of arriving at the park he was playing in.

Tamir’s life mattered. It still does. My thoughts are with his family today.

Gentle reminder that Mount Rushmore was a sacred place to the Lakota and the United States promised they would have it (and the entire Black Hills) in perpetuity as part of a legally binding treaty and then reneged as soon as gold was found,

Same folks calling college kids lazy and entitled are now telling them to suck it up and accept that the market doesn't have any new opportunities for them.
Kevin Hassett: "I think there could be a little bit of an almost quiet time in the labor market, because firms are finding that AI is making their workers so productive that they don't necessarily have to hire the new kids out of college and so on."

But death threats are inevitable. Death threats are the future. Our students must be trained in death threats for the job market.

Can we not acknowledge the AI industry as a death project? How many stories solely in the last week related AI & death?!

Trump defends platforming Nazis and celebrating racist traitors from our history but uses the full power of the US government to silence those who would teach or remember American heroes of color or ideas about tolerance or inclusion. Why? Promoting racism and misogyny is a core MAGA mission.

The Democrats called out racist shitbags and serial sex offenders.

If you heard those attacks and felt they were calling *you* out personally, then that's entirely on you, champ.

The rest of us white guys didn't hear that. At all.
Dems didn't brand "white dudes" as the "bad guy" as Portnoy suggests. We branded people who support a toxic, hate-filled convicted felon who abuses women and lies constantly about everything as the bad guys, and they just happen to be disproportionately white men.

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

It's my understanding that before the internet, many people could perhaps go days or even weeks without being apprised of what the worst men in the world were doing — let alone thinking — just living their lives concerned mostly with local events.

I envy that prelapsarian condition.

This is essentially the same story told by the Panama Papers of 2016, the Paradise Papers of 2017 & the Pandora Papers of 2020.

Nearly 7TB of data on released on wealthy people, mostly men, doing terrible things at scale & facing no consequences:barely any prosecutions, miniscule # of convictions.
The Epstein story gets a something that is tearing at the heart of the electorate: elite impunity. The idea that wealthy and powerful people can do terrible things *at scale* and face no consequences for them. Whatever political party actually stops it could rule the country for a generation.

I keep beating this drum: the kind of people one thinks of as Silicon Valley "techbro" are so often finance people with an engineering cosplay habit, not actual technologists

Elon Musk was famously *never* a good coder and I can't believe he ever scienced a rocket either. But he craves that respect
the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Part of the issue is that Good at Words people are generally inclined to accept that people are all different ways and to think that’s just fine. Good at Math people have been allowed too much room to think that only they have the thoughts that matter.
