MAD SISTERS OF ESI is one of The Washington Post’s 10 best SFF novels of 2025. In the sheer amount of what gets published each year and what gets lost, this feels like a small, precious miracle ❤️

Also not a bad idea to ask your doctor to check your MMR titers even if you are fully vaccinated, because immunity can wane on any of the three. I got mine checked earlier this year and discovered I was no longer immune to mumps. Sibling was no longer immune to measles. Find out the easy way!

Employees have been told they'll be placed on admin leave, with no word on duration or actual RIF procedures. If someone, anyone in media sees this, please be there. Document how they've illegally put in an Acting Director when the current leadership refused to terminate their employees in an illegal manner - the statue says only the DD for Libraries or the DD for Museums can be Acting Director without confirmation. Document how this administration is shutting down the disbursement of federal formula and discretionary grants to libraries and museums across the country. IMLS's reauthorization is up in September. Professional associations have been lobbying congress for the last year and they have widely had bipartisan support - and now crickets. The Rs are understandable; they're complicit and/ or terrified to stand up for learning institutions. The Ds? Who the fuck knows. IMLS, VOA/RFE/RFA, the Wilson Center, and the other small agencies whose federal funds don't even add up to $1B were the sacrificial lamb that Schumer for whatever reason agreed to, and now the Ds don't want to see the consequences of their fecklessness. By the way, anybody who uses Libby or other e-reader programs through their libraries or has ever gotten and inter-library loan... guess where the money for those programs comes from. Reed noticed abundant searches for information on current events. “In the early days of Covid 19, ‘coronavirus’ was one of the top searches, and there were a lot more for ‘online education,’ ” she said. “Some of the searches will break your heart too: seeing ‘gun control’ as a top search, ‘depression,’ ‘anxiety.’ But it’s important children have that access. And the way organizations are implementing stopwords, so much access is restricted.” Jennie Rose Halperin, executive director of Library Futures, agreed that digital censorship obscures data without leaving a literal gap on the bookshelf. Until recently, she said, “no one knew what a database was, so they came for the books.” But, Halperin noted, once so-called parents’ rights groups and conservative organizations focused on data providers such as EBSCO, ProQuest, Sage, Cengage Group, and Follett Content Solutions, they took steps to scare entire organizations into compliance. According to the Neo-Censorship report, this resulted in content providers implementing “local controls” on databases, particularly related to health and race. “Under even the smallest of threats, the companies have provided the tools or have secretly put on the tools—we don’t know—that apply the content blocking on these systems,” Halperin said. “It’s more wide-reaching than banning a list of books” because a stopword may be assigned to an entire database and restrict every student from that term.
