Putting the Rowan in Rowan, Rook and Decard since 2017. Green Party in Sheffield. They/them.
Pinned
Spent the weekend at the Green Party’s Path to Parliament event, meeting a lovely bunch of smart, passionate, excited people and getting hopeful (with a brief cameo from @zackpolanski.bsky.social). There’s likely to be more politics on here from me, for a while. It’s time to try and change stuff.

Opinion: We need to prepare for the possibility that the U.S. uses military coercion against Canada
After the capture of Venezuela’s president and Trump’s musing about Greenland, Canada must consider the worst-case scenario

went out for Christmas dinner, bought a stack of books from the charity shop and then spent two hours carefully organising and labelling tarot card samples with their materials, manufacturing details and print finishes

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

@decassette.bsky.social hi I just wanted to say I read A Frog In The Fall yesterday and it was an absolute delight; thanks for making something excellent and beautiful

This is a thread worth reading in general, but I wanted to explicitly pull out this idea. A lot of indie TTRPG enjoyers care about, and really want, beautiful, well-made, delightful books, in the same way art history nerds do. Sure, the book is not the game, but also the game is not the book.
Specifically, we like to assume that the reasons the market wants the shiny books is because people ate vapid or shallow or don’t understand.

That’s bullshit, and it’s bullshit that’s part of the problem.

to be fair, most of us spend a perfectly normal amount of time talking about paper, I fear I’m very much papers georg in this situation
Please we spend so much time talking about paper
If I could change ONE THING about TTRPG reviews I would force people to engage with the quality of the physical books themselves, not just the content inside.

It feels vanishingly rare to see a reviewer discuss form factor, paper stock, binding, cover treatments, or general durability etc. 1/2

Getting up early during the Darkest Month to have a long technical conversation about paper opacity. This too is a TTRPG

Two ways to read this. One is “she lost on every substantive claim, completely failed in her attempts to ban trans staff from the workplace, and won mild procedural victories against her employers handling of her case”.
The other way is, I guess, “point one is longer so it must be more important”

probably my hottest take for the last year or so has been that print media is, in fact, going to come back in some really interesting ways, and the more AI gets splatted at the top of Google the more true I think that becomes
This is awesome. Print is such a good way to get around a bunch of distribution (and surveillance!) mechanisms that seem otherwise mandatory in this very gross economy. It is really nice to see it spelled out like this.

It works great for us, and it'll work great for other places!
404 Media is making a print zine! About the surveillance technologies used by ICE. 16 pages, riso printed. Shipping early January. Features reworked versions of our best reporting and a few new things. We're very excited! And hope to do more if people like it:

Absolutely no honest self-analysis whatsoever of what will happen when you spend a year solid telling social liberals to fuck off. Surprise surprise! They fuck off! It's nothing to do with them being 'unserious' - this government just spends quite a lot of its time telling them it hates them!
It really does feel like a lot of the people currently in government never really asked themselves why many of their own supporters went for Corbyn in the first place and, similarly, are unwilling to ask the same question of Polanski's success.

It's a self-revealing kind of ignorance.

folks with many books, especially with a chunk either published pre-ISBN or by teeny tiny presses who haven’t done the bar code thing yet - how do you keep track of em? I have hit the stage of needing to know what I’ve got in the library, for both insurance and duplicate avoidance purposes

I think it’s possible one of the smartest things I ever did was to find out what shoes nurses recommend for shift wear and then buy two pairs of them for conventions.

Reading Color Problems, a 1901 treatise on colour theory by Emily Noyes Vanderpool, in which the author organises her pottery collection (among other things) into 10x10 squares of colours. Extremely neurotypical behaviour
