Like, USAID still legally exists, still receives budget from Congress, and the few dozen remaining employees (who work at State) still have usaid.gov emails and all our systems and databases still exist.

It's just the 10k of us who actually did the work are gone. Just do that to ICE and CBP.
Simply hire a bunch of 22yo kids into jobs of unclear legitimacy, put them in charge of DHS, fire all DHS employees, and fold DHS into idk the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. It's all legal now. I don't want to hear this loser shit anymore after what they did to my friends.
One thing that's important to realize now is that, even in a scenario where Dems sweep to a crushing trifecta in 2028, Republicans will use their control of the courts to attempt to continue, as much as they can, to run executive agencies in exile, with DHS/ICE under Biden as the model

My latest for Liberal Currents. A substantial portion of conservatives want to be rich people in a poor country because it affords them a greater sense of hierarchy and power. We misunderstand that at our peril, but making it clear and not affording them the benefit of the doubt could save us.
"One of the best takeaways those of us on the left or the center can hold is that tariffs, the annihilation of the safety net, aggressive tax cuts, and all of their other fiscal policies are not about enrichment as an end unto itself: they’re about impoverishment as a means to reinforce hierarchy."
The Pain Is the Plan
MAGA is actively seeking to immiserate the country in order to cement their power over the rest of us.

If there are still people to reflect on what is happening now in a 100 years, they will have a damning view of the easy ride the far right was given by the mainstream elite

Incredible how the institutions we were told would protect us from fascism did not simply crumble but opened the gates

Every child needs to hear this, and remember it, as a teen, as an adult, when they are very old.

Rest in Power Rev. Jesse Jackson
Rev. Jesse Jackson's "I *am* somebody..." remains one of the all-time great pieces of 20th century rhetoric / agitprop

And he could deliver it at a Black separatist meeting, the Democratic National Convention, or on god-blessed Sesame Street (see below 🥹)

i really loved THE LOST DAUGHTER, one of my fav movies of the weird post-pandemic mostly-streaming movie era, and am honestly psyched maggie gyllenhaal is following up an surprising and emotionally intense family drama with what appears to be a deranged 1920s chicago gangster frankenstein movie
the only reason i want to see this new bride of frankenstein is i think jesse buckley is a genius i’m pretty much committed to watching anything she does

really impressive work here. I would guess that the Chinese government cracking down on the kidnapping of its nationals (and the targeting of Chinese citizens) also pushed the cartels toward African labor and an English-speaking target audience more.
Wrote for @theglobeandmail.com:
I spent months hearing from African survivors of Myanmar scam camps, where trafficking victims are forced to run scams targeting westerners. Chinese criminals & at least one pro-junta militia cooperate to dish out horrific abuse against migrants to ensure compliance.
Africans are being confined and beaten in scam camps in Myanmar
Migrants toil for long hours on social-media platforms, targeting people with crypto and romance scams

'the company that maintains my boyfriend's AI persona has jacked up the price ten-fold' is pretty classic cyberpunk; that the persona or the relationship never meaningfully existed in the first place is a level of bitter irony that might be too much even for an often ironic genre.
Oof, this pinned post where a mod describes predatory product promoters. My impression of AI service costs for a heavy user at the $20 a month level is currently heavily subsidized; being in a position where you need something a company is providing at a loss is a precarious position.

Yanno, "deportation" is just the modern, cleaned up way to say "banishment." For most of human history, banishment was a punishment reserved for the worst crimes, and considered a slightly kinder equivalent to the death penalty.

Changing the name has not made it less severe.

The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there
agree with this (hah) but also think a particular mistake the left made for a long time online, and still makes to an extent, is failing to understand that the person whose mind you may actually change is the one reading the argument you're having, not the one you're arguing with
The secret to engaging in social media debate is knowing you will never win anyone over. The best you can hope for is to have people who already agree with tell you you're awesome. You might great a dopamine thrill from the righteousness of your anger! Fine benefits, all. But you will never win.

this is exactly why I am absolutely not willing to overlook anyone who was once “advocating for ending USAID” as merely committing a little oopsie-daisy-booboo, by the way
The Project 2025 author is using millions of dollars in USAID money for his own security detail.

It is estimated that 762,000 people have *already died* as a result of Elon Musk and Russell Vought’s obscene murder of USAID, including more than 500,000 children.

Vought is a mass murderer.

Buffett giving so much & remaining in the list is a more tremendous flex than any mere earnings could be. Guy's rocking 2000 lb training weights all the way through the tournament
Fascinating chart with one outlier: Warren Buffett.

At the low end, giving 0.06% of one's wealth is equivalent to:

Net worth -> Lifetime Giving
50K->$30
100K->$60
500K->$300
$1M->$600

Most folks give far more by % in a *single year*.

In many ways, the ICE drawdown in Minnesota reminds me of the “end” of the pandemic.

It’s only over for the people least affected. And even then, the slow, quiet escalation of harm will continue to move a lot of new people out of the “safe” category.

contrast this to a year ago when there was very little anti-Trump messaging in public from anyone in a position of power or influence

this is an big change and it does indicate his power over the elites - who have been much more deferential than society at large - is starting to wane
I know people like to dunk on wearing tiny "ICE OUT" pins, but I think they represent a really important culture shift. Even people who are very conscious about their image and expected to perform in a palatable way are wearing them in very public places.

There’s going to be Covid style shortages of cars, TVs and even washing machines and fridges, then job losses because assembly lines can’t source solid state memory, just so the stupidest person you know can state with 100% confidence a chatbot confirmed dinosaurs coexisted with humans.
I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

I literally saw a post two weeks back in which a guy with two jobs was flagellating himself because he was short on rent, lamenting that had he donated plasma more, maybe his rent would be on time. This system is deeply fucked. Earth is a pleasure cruise for 1000 people and we're all just the staff.
Is this the “golden age” economy we’ve heard so much about?
