No one who has seen the Epstein case unfold should have any doubt left about why victims don’t report. When reporting means facing more abuse, more exploitation, and more betrayal at the institutional level, while the perpetrators are the leaders of the very systems of “justice” supposed to help you

I'm not being facetious. Epstein was apparently giving talking points to the people pushing anti trans rhetoric in the UK.

As we explore here though, cordon sanitaires only work if they apply to wider discourse and beyond election

Otherwise, mainstreaming can go on even when far-right parties are defeated

Of course there are academics in the Epstein files

Academia is not a natural space for radical politics, knowledge and emancipation as many pretend it is, buoyed by reactionary moral panics

It is primarily built on conservatism, hierarchies and thirst for power so this should not be surprising

The poor and marginalized—always under an authoritarian boot

The privileged—judged harshly but mostly fairly in normal times

The elite—complete impunity, maybe sometimes have to pick a fall guy

Is there something a bit two tier, here?

It's easy to see these academics as individual bad actors. But I'd argue--they were enabled by "elite" schools' look-the-other-way approach to dealing with big-name abusers, and by the fact that, societially, we treat people associated with "elite" schools as automatically deserving of deference.
Academics vying for a spot in Epstein‘s world. There are so many. I feel the need to make a thread, so I don’t keep confusing them. 1/

Two things can be true: we’re a competitive authoritarian state with all sorts of efforts to put a thumb on the scale of who has power AND we have sufficiently free and sufficiently fair elections that every month we see the party in power lose.
JUST IN: Democrats flip a red seat in the Texas Senate.

Taylor Rehmet wins against Leigh Wambsganss, a conservative activist who helped lead right-wing efforts to take over TX school boards.

With all early vote, and 95% of precincts, in, Dem up 57/43.

Trump won this seat by 17% in Tarrant County.
