1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

A number of abolitionists have worked for years to successfully close a number of jails and prisons in the US. Too bad *reformers* have nothing to learn from them especially in this moment.

The Border Patrol Is the Problem. It Always Has Been

The violence, racial profiling and disregard for the Constitution that have burst into public view in Minneapolis are not new or unusual for the Border Patrol ..
"If you are uncomfortable with what the Border Patrol is doing in Minneapolis, you are uncomfortable with the Border Patrol, full stop."
Shocking but not really surprising. Horrific from way back.

Folks say this to also excuse behavior against Black health workers who care for the elderly. Someone said, how you forgetting everything except the fact you hate Black people? 🙃
Just want to say, I see all the comments saying it’s a sign of his senility or mental decline. You could be right but I have a thing about linking racism to mental acuity. Not sure it needs to be, most of the time, and I don’t like the idea of racism as deviant, for a lot of reasons.

The FDA recently approved the birth control implant Nexplanon for use up to five years, instead of three. But to providers' surprise, it also placed the device under a special monitoring protocol called REMS, which is infamous for the way it has limited access to medication abortion.
The FDA Quietly Slapped More Restrictions on the Birth Control Implant
The agency recently approved Nexplanon for up to five years of use—but it also imposed extra regulations that leave some providers worried.

"US mathematician Gladys Mae West was best known for her foundational work on GPS systems. As an African American woman, West overcame huge barriers to contribute to this key technology." 👇🏾
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Basically there was a time when the media was the strongest pillar of democracy in Kenya. But that changed when the main broadcasters began to cluster around some local billionaires most of whom were high profile politicians. Kenya’s media looks free but it’s complicated.

Been thinking a lot about these Washington Post layoffs, and the parallels to what happened to the media in Kenya in the 2000s. For context, Kenya had one state owned broadcaster until 1992 but we have always had at least two newspapers (often more). We had one radio broadcaster in two languages.

In New Jersey, AIPAC went on the attack against a moderate Dem & former member of Congress, a longtime supporter of Israel who'd offered some criticism. They tried to help another Dem.

The result appears to be fueling a 3rd candidate, the one who ran on the most left wing lane.

By the way, Gelerntner has been a longtime critic of women in the workforce and also a longtime favorite of the tech-right; in 2016, Peter Thiel nominated him for the role of Science Advisor to the President, although his influence in Silicon Valley long predates that.
Yale prof David Gelernter defends his letter urging Epstein to hire "v small goodlooking blonde" student by saying that he was "keep[ing] the potential boss's habits in mind."

This creep shouldn't be allowed anywhere near students.
