The AI bubble may be about to bust.

Peter Thiel has sold all of his Nvidia stock.

We all need to say this very clearly:

NO BAILOUTS FOR THEFT-TECH!

Expropriate their asses instead.

They stole from all of us and fully plan to burn the planet.

They owe us - not the other way around. 1/3

#lodelrol

Game design MEANS something, and if the reason you picked a mechanic boils down to a shrug, that means something too

I've noted it a lot, I will doubtlessly note it again, how weird it is that the TRPG hobby specifically devotes so much discourse to trying to distance itself from the actual "game" part of the acronym
Game mechanics aren't that special.

There is nothing inherently better about rolling 2d6 vs a d12, rolling over or under a stat for a skill check, or using tokens.

The special part is when you, the designer, noticing how a particular mechanic lets you share a part of the human experience

9/ It's also true that in this case the unspoken part of "rulings" is "from someone with professional experience in the area and the knowledge base to be able to adjudicate outcomes based on the real world". That's not really the case for most of us GMing.

1/ I think you really see this in stuff round "rulings not rules".

It starts with a simple truism - outside a handful of outliers RPG rules are about telling you what you can do, not excluding anything not mentioned.

So you need a way of adjudicating actions outside that framework.
theres this situation that occurs where two people can be talking about ttrpg rules and the role of rules, and the average person in this conversation talks about rules as "the content of the book" while others, especially osr people, use "rules" to mean "the thing telling me what to do"

It's why there is so much, I dunno, gall felt when you present a world you crafted to the public and a bunch of people pop up to tell you "you don't have to tell me how to craft masks, I know how that works". The audacity to dismiss an artist's work as derivative before even looking at it.

It's also why a lot of indies are very adamant about the importance of Rules. Because they are inventing new contexts which only the writer intuitively knows.

Entire thread is great but this specific point, with reference to Kriegspiel is incredibly important. "Rulings" are not created from nothing, they emerge from context and experience. It's why OSR games, regardless of how "weird" they are, all largely exist in the same dungeoncore fantasy space.

This says less about RPGs more about how Yankees are deeply fucked up by both

1) The violence of their state, which instills coercivity into even the most pro-social of rule arrangements

2) Their inability to see the pro-social nature of countless social institutions (all of them made of rules)

If I understood correctly, then this post is saying what I've been saying less succinctly: if a game claims to be about something, I want the *game* to be about that. I want to *play* that something, not just incidentally narrate about it while playing a different game attached to this narrative.
