Its here! A new blog post! A deep dive into Mothership's "combat" (Violent Encounters) and why excactly it trips some people up. If you aren't interested in mothership i still reccomend this - its about how we write rules and display information. This took me a long time and im proud of it :)
The Combat Conundrum: how violence actually works in mothership.
Mothership is a a game about rising stress, and that's not just limited to within the mechanics: I could fill the constant rubbing out and rewriting of the s...

cant get over how much attacks of opportunity suck in dnd 5e like the core concept makes sense; If you move away from a foe they get a chace to hit you BUT it just doesnt care about what that incentivises the play to be - stopping any tactics outside of rolling to hit everytime until their dead

my politics teacher used to say BBC was a good source of new because "both sides hate it" (and he was a rather liberal man, not shy about his views) ~ The entire point of the right attacking an already right wing pushing bbc is to normalise their transphobia and farage-platforming as "neutral"

its just another step of widespread anti-intellectualism (alongside ostracising the failing of gender performance) ~ we've had years of protein-wanking gym bros flaunt themselve online, and its only the men reading that get labeled as "performative"
People are being accused of "reading performatively", that is reading in public as a way of showing off or 'looking cool'?

That sounds like an accusation made by people who don't read.

The eternal struggle with rules discourse is trying to get a majority of people to understand rules are the medium. Rules. Are. The. Medium.

We are an artform where we're still discussing if a movie needs to be a series of sequential images.

I actually think a big problem that has been endemic to RPG design for decades is simply that designers don't consider their game mechanics ENOUGH, like the story of Greg Stolze asking the oWoD guys "why do you have variable TNs AND variable success thresholds" and getting blank stares in return

one thing i do love with del toro is that he understands that gothic can and should still be colourful! it stems from the romantics after all! i am myself always torn between loving the gothics and yet being a hater of fully black clothing and he establishes a blueprint to life i find nourishing

del toro's frankenstein is as subtle as a bag of bricks and as meaningful; its gorgeous but i feel like im watching fan art. thoroughly enjoyed it but at the same time ive come out of it feeling very hollow, and ultimately nihilistic about the endeavour of adaptations.

I AM WAITING for my girlfriend to get home so i can watch frankenstein ahhh reading the short stories of mariana enriquez has put me really in the mood for gothic fiction

This is my grandfather, Brigadier G. B. Vaughan-Hughes MC in 1919, aged 22/23, ‘somewhere in France,’ on Joey, his army mount. He bought Joey off the army and let him live a long and happy life in Wales. ‘Tommy,’ as grandpa was called, had entered the war early in 1915 as an 18-year-old 2nd Lt …1/

starting "all quiet on the western front" today, which i found in a castle's second-hand bookshop. I was disappointed in the movie adaptation and even more pissed off with the reddit comment I saw saying it was "too nihilistic and one-sided about the war" so im glad to be reading it finally.

everything that has happened to video games will happen to ttrpgs - hell it already has, look at all the american defence contractors connected to wotc and critical role.

not sound like a liberal, because the contradiction IS the point, but by god its crazy that those who wank over the poppy the most are the same tory/reform fuckers who call for mandated military service for the youth. Respect the symbol, but never the message is the entire bit of right wingers.

‘Biological pronouns’, now part of a decision in the US courts, was workshopped in plain sight by British GCs. British GCs have been ascendant in large part due to US funding of their associated fake charities and activist orgs.

Great thread; This definition of ruling is gonna be rattling in my head for a while i feel. It relates to something I was thinking about recently how an issue i find with some OSR games but not others is when theres too many options for a particular ruling, fixed by having "tight" rules.
1/ I think you really see this in stuff round "rulings not rules".

It starts with a simple truism - outside a handful of outliers RPG rules are about telling you what you can do, not excluding anything not mentioned.

So you need a way of adjudicating actions outside that framework.
theres this situation that occurs where two people can be talking about ttrpg rules and the role of rules, and the average person in this conversation talks about rules as "the content of the book" while others, especially osr people, use "rules" to mean "the thing telling me what to do"

charades is a weird fucking game; its starts with performing a set of arcane gestures that everyone else seems to know that fundementally comes across as cheating. Its a noun? Its a film? Its 4 letters? What the fuck am i guessing then??? This shit doesnt fly in pictionary!!

not often a fan of "tough guy lead" but geralt witcher is a character i do like a lot - how his kindheartedness is a flaw against his job and the affect ostracisation of his job and mutations has upon him. His character also never translates well in screen or game because of how internalised he his
