They’ve convinced people AI chatbots aren’t only speaking but thinking, which is plausible if you don’t know how they work. They perform some cognitive tasks, but any logic in their “thinking” is only a residue hidden in our language—its grammar, concepts, etc. in the training data they gobbled up.

When talking to conspiracy nuts in the past, I've realized that yes they want to feel special, but it's also about control. If you know the tap water is poison, you can protect yourself with a filter. A lot of the grift is based on fear of what you can't control and coming up with a counterspell.
I don’t know if we in the US are particularly predisposed to conspiracy thinking, but I do think that a lot of people in this country want to believe that they are special.
