'the company that maintains my boyfriend's AI persona has jacked up the price ten-fold' is pretty classic cyberpunk; that the persona or the relationship never meaningfully existed in the first place is a level of bitter irony that might be too much even for an often ironic genre.
Oof, this pinned post where a mod describes predatory product promoters. My impression of AI service costs for a heavy user at the $20 a month level is currently heavily subsidized; being in a position where you need something a company is providing at a loss is a precarious position.

*I get it about the oxymoronic aspects of "retrofuturism," but I'm genuinely interested in the history of futurity. Like: how did people in the past contemplate the passage of time
*For instance: this prop isn't a commercial artifact, but it's a valid theatrical statement in a cinematic tradition

This meme also annoys me because “I want smaller, cheaper games” = cutting labor, the most expensive part of gamedev.
Which is, you know, the whole problem with the industry right now.
I know it's meant in good faith but "if we just made smaller scope games and charged 20-40 dollars for them it would fix the industry" is very funny to me. indies release like 20 of those a week on steam. are you buying them? is the industry fixed? no? hm. sounds like you need a different solution

I was thinking that if the song “Despacito” came out today there’d be like 20 “think pieces” all like “Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee come together to prove love is love in any language!” or someshit
it has been since probably the early 2010s since i regularly heard people saying 101 level phrases like "the patriarchy hurts men too" and we should bring it back bc american culture has regressed so much since then that it's pretty pathetic tbh

seriously though, Metal Gear Solid 4 IS on many levels “about” the PlayStation 3, the console hardware “arms race” of that era, and how the game’s creator felt like an aging relic called in to “save” the platform by exploiting its technology to questionable ends.

The game you are about to play is a product of its time. It may depict the PS3, which was commonplace in society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

In case you missed it, I wrote a blog post to introduce people to the concept of procedural narrative!
Today on Hidden Door's not-so-hidden blog, we talk about procedural narrative + procedural generation (or procgen if you're COOL). You've probably seen procgen before, whether you know it or not. But where?! Secrets revealed, procedures explained:

This is the first in a series of posts explaining how our narrative systems work. As I (Rourke, narrative systems designer here at Hidden Door) was outlining what the series would look like I realized...

Their internal memo: “We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.”
