In the 2010s I wrote a short novel for children (never published). Eventually I realised it wasn't a children's story after all, and rewrote it for adults.

But when it was still #kidlit I did some illustrations for it, inspired by John Burningham. I'll share some below.

First, the adult cover:

Finally she chooses one, pays from an embroidered change purse, then kisses it with great ceremony before handing it to her farm gear and gumboot wearing Dad.
Dad taken off guard, eyes watering, picks her up for a big hug. (3)

Opening episode of The Beast in Me:

Wouldn’t any woman skedaddle the moment the possibly wife-murdering new neighbour walks up to a woman at another table in a restaurant and violently smashes her phone for taking a sneaky picture?

The story lost me at that moment.

Aotearoa New Zealand is desperately short of nurses.
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."

Ditto for conversations about getting students back to the classroom.
Any conversation about return to office vs work from home that does not acknowledge the ongoing pandemic is ignorant, ableist and destined to miss the mark.
Many, including disabled people but not only disabled know they cannot risk getting COVID and offices haven’t taken steps to protect workers.

Autistic people need two types of accommodations:

Type #1: Ear defenders, quiet workstations, note taking apps

Type #2: Decolonized workplaces, justice for all, truly sustainable work

Employers freak out about #1 and never even see #2 coming.

Watched the first (free) episode of Pluribus.

Yes, it fully held my attention. But I’m not sure I want to spend any more time with this woman.

I also don’t trust Vince Gilligan with female characterisation.

So I’ll at least wait til they’ve all dropped before paying to see the rest.

She was Autistic.

There’s no “high end”.

Everyone with ED should be given all the accommodations the most qualified Autistic professional would give their younger selves.

“put down to women being older in their first pregnancy; possibly overweight and not doing enough exercise”

This is maddening. There’s an article on the Diabetes Australia website from 2022 linking Covid to diabetes.

But no. It’s the “lifestyle choices” of “women” rather than “vax and relax”.
