The pundit class's notion of "free speech" is predicated on a division of humanity into those who *participate* in debates and those who are the *topic* of debate, where treating one of the former as if they were one of the latter is seen as the direst of all threats to "free speech".

other people are focusing on Helen's views on gender (which is fine), but I do think there is something more interesting in understanding her (and imo, Matty's view) on how politics is supposed to work in society

they appear to think there's a centrist cultural settlement that is set from the top
this is what i mean when i say it is video game logic. as if you can choose change the slider to “centrist” and everything follows accordingly

The Atlantic is fishing around to write a story about the reaction to the Argument poll. You can be sure that the framing will be "unreasonable trans activists can't handle harsh truths of polling and try to shut down debate which is why they lost public opinion in the first place."

Also it's still reasonable to hold out hope for Jay-Den ending up with Darem *and* Kyle, right? Please?

Okay I am sold on Starfleet Academy. It's very much an accept-it-in-all-its-intermittently-cringey-absurdity thing (which is arguably a defining feature of the franchise), but this might be on track to be the best live-action Star Trek show since DS9.

(Also belatedly noticing that his list of things-that-could-reasonably-be-defended doesn't include continued access to my meds.)

It's really striking how much these discourses seem to assume that childhood and incarceratedness pick out different immutable kinds of people from the rest of us, rather than, you know, being states one can move out of or (in the latter case) into.
February 19, 2026 at 2:02 PM
Do the "far fewer people" groups include youth and incarcerated folks? Does he not understand that all of us were youth at some point in the past and that many of us take seriously the risk that anyone can *become* at least short-term incarcerated at the whim of some rando with a badge?

Does his version of "civil rights protections" in "public accommodations" by any chance involve them not being allowed to turn us away from the business but them being allowed and maybe required to make us use the wrong restroom when we're there?

I have a sort of Baconian knee-jerk hostility toward "great books" / "wisdom of the ancients" rhetoric, but, wow, this is so, so much worse.
Meanwhile, on threads, which actually is like what people on twitter think bluesky is like, a "teacher, author, poet" speaks...

Why can't they just meow at each other with different intonation like normal people?
February 18, 2026 at 7:51 PM
At this point I am prepared to believe that.
February 18, 2026 at 7:51 PM
It's the spread within what's roughly a single cultural domain (Americans who consume American secular popular media) that's throwing me.

Like, those two things are extremely different! Even more from each other than either is from just wanting coffee!
February 18, 2026 at 7:47 PM
Okay but isn't "wanna get coffee sometime" *also* a really famous established code for "I think you may have potential as a future sexual partner, but don't want to appear to forward, so I will use this euphemism to suggest meeting up in a public place to interview each other at greater length?"
February 18, 2026 at 7:46 PM
Yes of course but, like, I was used to "getting coffee" being thoroughly entrenched in pop culture as the default nonspecific activity you plan to do when you want to hang out more but don't have a specific activity or don't want to admit what the specific activity is.
February 18, 2026 at 7:16 PM
WHAT?

Also, wait sometimes people do in fact want to meet up for coffee sometime. How does I convey that sincere interest? How do I tell which one others mean?
February 18, 2026 at 7:01 PM
So how do I tell someone I *actually* want to meet up for coffee sometime?

Okay also this was just released and I am not personally going to run out and buy one for a bunch of reasons but I would describe it as a technology I find exciting.

GR IV Monochrome - Ricoh
The GR IV’s body has been thoroughly redesigned, offering enhanced performance in a compact and slimmer body, while layout of control buttons and dials have been redesigned.

But something about that one does feel soul-crushingly stupid in its own special way. I get it.
February 18, 2026 at 3:08 PM
RIGHT!?
February 18, 2026 at 3:07 PM
Also I am in fact pretty excited about improvements in various features available in mainstreaming programming languages over the past few decades. I just wish more people would use them to build things other than the murder drones & the crime money speculation bubble & the bullshit oracle.
February 18, 2026 at 3:06 PM
Also like incremental improvements in the quality and technical sophistication of vibrators in the past few decades are nontrivial, so there's that?

(Also the obvious things others have said about rail and renewable energy.)
February 18, 2026 at 3:01 PM
Seriously there are a bunch of new & old medical technologies that I am extremely excited about (mRNA vaccines, PrEP, SSRIs, amphetamines...) and various factions of the right right are currently attacking most of them. (Though I guess the AI bros are probably cool about the amphetamines at least.)
