Before 1929, for Americans "the Great Depression" meant the depression of 1873.
Under appreciated factor is the Panic of 1873. If the Republicans had had a more successful domestic economy they might have been able to maintain reconstruction
We killed a quarter of the South’s male population and reduced it to the brink of famine.

It wasn’t a lack of ruthless violence that caused us to fail at Reconstruction later on (we crushed the Klan). It was just plain old exhaustion from war and an economic depression.

the Trump administration's sheer disregard for rule of law is in danger of making the federal judiciary look less than the politicized nest of fascism that must be bulldozed in 2029
BREAKING: The Trump administraiton has committed a mass violation of ICE detainees' constitutional rights in MN, effectively blocking their acess to attorneys in the Whipple building, a judge ruled tonight.

The judge: Trump appointeee Nancy Brasel

Well this is certainly a lede, and they didn't even get in that one account was called ricosuave666: "Israel has arrested several people, including army reservists, for allegedly using classified information to place bets on Israeli military operations on Polymarket." (🎁)
Israeli Soldiers Accused of Using Polymarket to Bet on Strikes
The country’s internal security agency indicted a reservist and a civilian for security offenses, bribery and obstruction of justice in connection with the bets.

“Last May, as a groundswell built demanding public scrutiny of the Justice Department's records on Epstein, the agency ran into a problem: it had already destroyed its master copy of surveillance video from Epstein's final hours in the Metropolitan Correctional Center.”
Newly released documents show the FBI's scramble to explain last year why it released a screen recording with a missing minute from the night Jeffrey Epstein died, instead of the original footage.

enacting massive administrative barriers to voting privileges the party most enthusiastic about voting. in this case it also privileges people with passports. it would be an extinction-level event for the GOP

this is a hideous, fascist piece of legislation, but it would also probably result in democratic supermajorities nationwide in 2026
NEW: House passes SAVE America Act

218-213; Rs + 1 Dem (Cuellar) vote yes.

Revised Trump-backed bill requires showing proof of citizenship "in person" to register and slaps photo ID rules to vote.

Now it goes to the Senate. No path to 60. THUNE promises a vote.

House passes SAVE America Act, sending Trump-backed election bill to the Senate
The legislation would overhaul federal election laws in all 50 states by imposing new voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. But it faces a daunting path in the Senate.

Two Rs didn’t vote: Moore (WV) and Murphy. The rest voted to preserve Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

The 1 Democrat who voted no: Golden (ME)

also IF the AI doomerism was correct and we are in the process of building literal Skynet the ONLY ethical way forward would be to deploy lethal military violence against the AI industry and it's researchers worldwide.

If you aren't suggesting that, you don't believe this is end-the-world serious.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.
