Me: I want Starbucks to fail and small cafes to thrive.

Also me: NOT LIKE THAT!
After spending a few days in the car sprawl of Louisville I can see how Starbucks sales are in decline.

These little drivethrus have popped up everywhere in a matter of months

Excellent thread. Fully endorse all of these thoughts.
Yesterday on my way to the gym I hit 500 miles on my ebike. Before I got it, I basically never biked, so almost all of those trips would have been by car. It was ~40 degrees out and I was on my way to swim when I hit 500 miles. Absolutely life changing.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

The New York Times' story about Trump calling for the execution of members of Congress ran on Page 16 today, with an itty-bitty promo on the front about halfway down the page.
No wonder Trump thinks he can get away with anything.

Cw: suicide
This article is devastating.

Earlier this month, a 15-year-old died by suicide the day after posting about a substitute teacher insisting on misgendering him.

Suicide can have many contributing factors. His family is speaking out about bullying and misgendering as two.

Holy shit man. We must demand better from the county. This is completely unacceptable.

Stop sign doesn’t work? Fine, then put in speed bumps, narrowing measures, or other traffic calming infrastructure.

“We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas” ass shit.
for months my neighbors have been fighting @mcdotnow.bsky.social for stop signs at intersections where drivers hit an 11yo, as well as my dog and I. Michael Paylor, #2 at MCDOT, literally said the best thing the county can do is “nothing”

I mean it's not this simple but a handful of policy elites really did drastically reengineer our urban fabric in ways that were popular in the immediate term and created massive social dysfunction beyond that.
Because a lot of leftists/progressives have pseudo conspiratorial models of reality where they think the only reason Americans live in suburbs is bc GM tore up the streetcar lines in LA etc.

Clearest evidence that Will genuinely just wading into all of this based on instinct…
I am extremely skeptical of this - in my experience real people, as opposed to internet weirdos, are generally much more concerned with size than location. Also the location tradeoffs are exaggerated. “You can’t get an affordable unit within 30 minutes of downtown” or whatever is almost always wrong

This whole exchange is super funny but this has to be the most hilarious part. I would absolutely love it if we could upzone the Montgomery county suburbs. That is basically the dream of every YIMBY in the county lol
YIMBYs often absolutely cannot admit this because it suggests that you can only achieve so much by upzoning the city. In fact some of the biggest gains from upzoning, I’d argue, are to be found in UPZONING THE SUBURBS, allowing low-density burbs to become moderate-density burbs.
The level of denial in the replies is amazing. Lots of people like living in the suburbs. That’s just all there is to it.

With the world heating up [and more pedestrians being killed], why are more SUVs being sold?

“It’s the industry that has driven the demand through huge marketing & advertising campaigns in recent years. SUVs offered the industry a simple way of charging more for a vehicle that does the same thing.”

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

And how much Transportation is hidden in the other categories? What portion of Housing costs is the garage under your apartment building? What portion of Food is the sea of parking surrounding the supermarket? What portion of Healthcare is car-related injury and respiratory disease?
Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)!
To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.

Important to remember in DC “housing policy” means cheaper mortgages. There’s a reason that oversight of housing is in financial services in the house. Technical issues like zoning, building codes, and fire safety features have been ignored on the national level.
DC is so funny. What housing policy expertise does Summers possess exactly? Lmao
NEW: Before the recent Epstein disclosures, Larry Summers was poised to lead the economic policy plank for the Democrats' "Project 2029" effort at the Center for American Progress. He signed off on a housing policy paper CAP was prepping for next week.
