I like following Bouie because of threads like this where he reminds us of how today's struggles are struggles as old as the republic and similarly, that there is an American identity to be forged in the ideals of liberal democracy.
interesting to think that revolutionary era americans understood themselves as making a break with the “old world” and establishing a new civilization. and crucially, this new civilization rested on republican self-government, not “sovereignty.”
The Rubio speech really is appalling, and if you haven’t read it yet, you should.

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that a Jersey dude so horrified that he went to his first protest and is trying not to cry on camera has a pretty good chance of staying radicalized. And that while Bluesky loves to pick apart things like this, this kinda video moves the needle for OTHER dudes.
Yesterday morning kids were sent running from their bus stop in panic because ICE showed up. This guy at today’s ICE Out of Lindenwold protest is a must watch 😭. @maddow.bsky.social

In 1854, after watching the federal government deploy 2000 federal troops and spend $40,000 sending Anthony Burns back into slavery, Boston's Amos Adams Lawrence said “we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists.”

This episode has been a nightmare for my city and state, but I hope people realize it’s also a profound defeat and political catastrophe for Trump and DHS, who are slinking away having accomplished nothing. Minneapolis simply wouldn’t bend to them and they lost

Every photo from Minneapolis looks like this. Cops decked out with guns and full tac gear facing off against people in bathrobes, parkas, and sweatpants armed only with whistles and cell phones.

Yet every verified MAGA chode on X dutifully calls it a riot or violent insurrection.

I think collectively, we at least partially wanted the child at the Super Bowl to be Liam because the little boy on stage looked happy and healthy and our hearts want so badly to think these children can somehow magically recover from the evils our government is doing.
Super Bowl viewers Sunday speculated that 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos appeared in the halftime show. In fact, he has been in hiding with his family.

“He can’t sleep well at night. He wakes up three or four times a night screaming, ‘Daddy, Daddy,’” Liam's father Adrian Conejo Arias, said.

It should be pointed out more frequently that they fought and died for this country also.

It remains under-discussed in the media how much the current administration is spitting on this history. (same for our 🇪🇺 allies, same for refugees from the Vietnam War).
“They don’t speak our language.” Well, nobody worried about that when Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry deployed to Korea in 1950. By war’s end, six men had been awarded DSC’s, 130 were awarded SS’s, and 3,800 were awarded PH’s. They remain one of the most heavily decorated NG units.
