Higher Ed students are members of your community, PERIOD.
If they work in your city, they pay local taxes & as residents they are spending their money *locally*.

Stop treating student housing as some sort of burden and start putting some respect on them as part of the citizenry of your city.
How is a student who lives in New York not a New Yorker?

With the failure to pass Prop Q, Austin will have diminished capacity to deal with this.
The Trump admin is about to cut housing grants for the formerly homeless.

HUD plans to cut aid for permanent housing by 66%, slashing over $2 billion and leaving 170,000 people at risk of homelessness again.

Everyone who would be affected is disabled, and many are 50 or older.

yeah, everyone has their own miniature version of being a apprachnik in a dictatorship. “yes, the crop yield numbers are fake, but if the farmers pretend to have a harvest i shall pretend to believe them”
I’ve been fascinated with this phenomena since Musk bought Twitter. People there, smart ones, know the algo is manipulated and know much of their “reach” are bots, but the fake numbers that they KNOW are fake still “feel” better than real numbers that might be numerically less but actual people.

Harm to SNAP recipients, federal workers, and others is real. In a normal democracy it’d make sense to prioritize reducing that harm in the short term.

In a rapidly backsliding democracy, harm is happening no matter what. Preventing authoritarian consolidation is the most harm-reducing move.
two contradictory ideas that i hold in my head at the same time: 1) i think the threat to both SNAP recipients and federal workers is significant enough now that even bad deals are worth making to prevent further harm, and, 2) everyone who caves now should retire in shame

I very much like AI when it means machine learning, which (as in this case) is doing a great deal of good in many fields.

I even think LLMs have good uses.

I’m just not keen on subcontracting thought to LLMs.
Holy shit. This company claims it has developed an air-source heat pump with a COP of *7* (3-5 is considered good). For you non-nerds, that basically means it produces 7 units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes. How are they doing it? You're not gonna like this answer, but: it's AI.

🚨 TAKE ACTION NOW 🚨

The bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, passed by the Senate in October is major bipartisan action on housing! It's a housing bill that shifts many federal incentives for state and local housing policy.

We want to get this bill passed URGENTLY. Here's how you can help 🧵

This is a historic level of bipartisan cooperation to expand Americans' access to housing.

America is not building enough housing and Americans are facing sky-high housing costs as a result.

Today, the Senate took a historic step to change that.

The ROAD to Housing Act will help communities – urban, suburban, and rural – build more housing and bring down costs.

there’s a thing here about for the last decade or so, online people have been very negative about small talk - the weather, or local news, or whatever - and small talk is the grease that keeps physical interactions going, and i am tired of ceding that to shut-ins
i say thank you to the bus driver when i get on and yell thank you when i get off every day i ride the bus, and i take two buses to and from work, being nice and friendly costs you nothing and should be your default expectation for yourself because it improves your day and everyone else’s day
Being nice to people is just fun. Asked young server at taco place how her day was going (fine but tired) and she asked me back. I said I managed to finish my to-do list and she unexpectedly gave me a high five! Treating people like people is always rewarding.

This is the message. Make it clear that these billionaires aren't just worried about losing money. They're worried about losing the ability to exchange their money for power.

It's called "Doing the Double" because you get twice much housing and half the parking on the same site.
And on behalf of Austin, TX, early member of this illustrious housing reform club, we welcome Baltimore to our small but growing ranks. Now, who's next?
single stair + eliminating parking mandates - two great wins for affordable housing
🚨Baltimore has done it! The second-largest US city, after Denver, to pass a complete repeal of parking mandates in 2025.

whether people voted for this or not is kind of irrelevant now, people clearly fucking hate this shit in practice, the admin and the republican party are trying to insist that they have a broad popular mandate for this, and they do not

It's not that every individual driver is a murderous asshole (I'm not!). It's that car dependency as a whole is dangerous. It's that cars are deadly when they hit people. It's that our society prioritizes drivers above all else. It's about a system that is dangerous for anyone not in a car.
