Excellent father. Recovering politics and government guy. Suffering baseball fan. Here for history, Star Trek, and ridiculous takes on current events.
Annual #VeteransDay post of my grandpa, his buddy, and the porcupine a farm boy from Missouri found in Remagen, Germany, March 1945.

When you work for an elected, you will, from time to time, answer the phones. Even interns must go to the bathroom. Every morning the vm’s from overnight are listened to. You hear some ugly stuff. Some of it is about you, the “loser” who can’t find a real job. Mostly it’s about your boss.

Jeanne Shaheen’s daughter, Stefany, a candidate for Congress, is not happy with mom’s vote in the Senate. This could be the setting for a new dramedy on the CW.

It gets worse. He doubles down. This is the kind of person for whom ideological battles are worth more than the lives of people.

"The provision would close the so-called hemp loophole created by the 2018 Farm Bill that has allowed unregulated THC products to be sold around the country, irrespective of state cannabis laws." www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...
The government shutdown may last longer because of a fight over hemp
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said he will not support speedy passage of a deal to reopen the government because of a provision that would make some THC products illegal.

Coffee will keep us alive. We’ve always known this.

Coffee may protect against irregular heartbeats
It’s long been unknown what effect, if any, caffeine has on atrial fibrillation, or A-fib.

Far better than my poor powers to communicate the matter.
I have thoughts, and they aren’t going to fit neatly into Bluesky posts. Briefly:

1. The deal sucks.
2. Probably not as much as you think it does.
3. It’s good to be mad.
4. FFS, be madder at the GOP.
5. Strategy is hard.
5b. Timing matters.
6. The fight isn’t over.
7. Go pet a cat. (Or a dog.)

I don’t know why it isn’t discussed more, but the first land combat of the Continental Marines occurred at Princeton on January 3, 1777. Originally slated to participate in the raid on Trenton, the brigade to which they were attached failed to make the river crossing due to heavy ice floes.

Maybe I have missed it, but the arrests of Clase and Ortiz isn’t getting the attention from MLB Network that it deserves. Are we going to dismiss it as a one-off, or as symptomatic of a problem that goes much deeper than a couple of throwers?

“How did we get here?” Well, over 85 million registered voters (about 36% of the population) failed to show up in 2024. The difference between the candidates in Wisconsin alone was two votes per precinct. I think that’s worth looking at.

Folks with SNAP benefits, mothers using WIC, and federal workers are going to get paid. Air traffic controllers will be on the job. Those are all immutable positives. You have to be a stranger to reason to deny that. In terms of pure politics, Dems are well positioned to renew the fight in January.
November 10, 2025 at 2:20 PM
“Still, assessments of the break in the deadlock that came on Day 40 of the shutdown must also factor in whether the Democrats’ demand was achievable in the first place and whether the deepening pain of the shutdown..was about to make their position unsustainable.”

God forbid CNN get it.

It isn’t that Hill Republicans are more disciplined than their Dem counterparts; the ideological rigidity of the party as a whole—and radicalization of the base since 2009—gives them their marching orders. Dems have to play politics inside their own conference because it is more diverse.

The validation of US army doctrine in WW2 is found below. Apparently, all of those lessons learned from Kasserine to Messina filtered down.
What was it like to liberate France in 1944? Read this thread.
At 07 the next morning PFC MICHAEL J. KNESS decided to relieve himself & started to step outside. PVT DYER who was guarding at the time warned him about going outside.
KNESS went out anyway. DYER then turned his attention toward the window facing the road. It was still dark with limited visibility.

Any band brave enough to start their show with Tool’s ‘Prison Sex,’ definitely has no fucks to give.

#OTD 88 years ago, sleazy Chicago mob lawyer Edward O’Hare was gunned down after turning on Al Capone. You might know O’Hare’s son, “Butch,” for whom O’Hare Airport is named. Edward was originally from St Louis, which is where he left his wife and son when he abandoned them.

It really is poetry.
Facebook? This isn’t Facebook. It’s the wall at dusk, the last line between order and entropy. A man left his shopping cart dead center of the parking lot—metal glinting in the sun like wreckage. I saw it and remembered 73 Easting: chaos in the sand, armor pushing through dust and disbelief.
Dude get off Facebook. It'll be refreshing.

Did they appoint a Boston bookseller as chief of artillery? Maybe a former wagon master whose sole military experience was being flogged for insubordination?
Assuming the Resistance runs on the same principle as the Rebellion, their military discipline is a shit show

They promoted a smuggler with only experience in space operations to general, and a wannabe space monk who goes AWOL on a regular basis to O5
Mostly people don't believe the military is Like That. It is! You would not be rewarded for getting your bombing fleet trashed! An Admiral is not gonna take shit from a Captain!

But true to life military command structure is not what people want in their plucky underdog sci-fi, so it didn't work.

The men who joined the U.S. Army from 1863-65 have long been regarded as men who lacked the patriotic fervor of the Boys of ‘61 and ‘62, influenced more by enlistment bounties and fear of the draft, than love of country. Alexander Caillot offers a necessary corrective to that misconception.

White men overwhelmingly voted for a Black woman, unlike last November. Progress? 🙄

You can laugh, but Cornell offering to pay Trump $60 million to make the pain go away, is exactly the sort of pay-for-play example an “elite” institution sets for its young in 2025. How else will they learn how to play the game?

Today, I learned that Megyn Kelly has her own XM channel. That seems gratuitous. And awful.
