Having been published for essays about my lived experience; Sean is absolutely right. You can never control what the reader feels or thinks when they read your work.
You can write about yourself and still not really control what readers take from it, even though what the heck do they know about YOU, because half of the equation it is their own perspective. You can't control that, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. They might be wrong - or *more* perceptive.

In fairness to Afghans, this is a society bent badly out of shape by 50 years of war. I suspect that in particular the Soviet-Aghan War, with its huge displacement of civilian populations, drove a lot of the virulent misogyny of the Taliban. A lot of kids grew up with no dad, barely seeing mom.
