I can’t be a pessimist because I am alive. To be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So, I am forced to be an optimist. I am forced to believe that we can survive, whatever we must survive.

🔥 Trey Yesavage just made history!

6.1 IP | 2 H | 1 R | 0 BB | 12 K 💥

Gives up just one solo shot — and sets a new World Series rookie strikeout record in a single game🏆

What a performance. Absolutely dominant 👏💙

This was incredible to see. I wasn't paying attention to a chunk of the game watching some of the pitches and strikeouts on replay
Trey Yesavage struck out 12 batters and walked none in seven innings of one-run ball in Game 5 of the freakin' World Series.

He also generated 23 whiffs tonight, the most by any pitcher in the World Series in the pitch-tracking era (since 2008).

Here are his dozen strikeouts against the Dodgers.

Me: Which is why I did a Chotiner interview meme post

Chotiner: but you did want engagement

Me: Oh, of course! But it wasn’t just that.

C: You felt you could add to the conversation

Me: My own perspective.

C: By posting the same joke as everyone else

Me: it’s a funny variation

“where were you when you discovered there was no gerudo mask and the great fairy mask did not Work Like That” is the “where were you on 9/11 “ of late millennial/early zoomer transfems, send tweet.
I mean, the basic premise is “what if you could switch bodies and also you were stuck in the wrong one for a bit,” so...

The OP has a later post with a good joke/comment about therapy, but I do wonder how much my own "gifted kid" education is responsible for how difficult the transition to college and graduate school was. I've turned out okay (I think) and have a small modicum of success in academia but it wasn't easy
Speaking up as a Former Gifted Kid™

Gifted Education in the late 90s early 00s kind of drilled into my head that All You Need To Do Is Be Smart. This was positively reinforced constantly with rituals and symbols of Recognition (e.g., the Honor Roll)

This was to my detriment
What do they feel should've been done differently? How has this impacted them? Have opportunities for these children to thrive been gradually disappearing?

It feels to me like one problem in this discourse is people don't talk enough about growth (and grace) enough. Obviously the manosphere stuff doesn't want their clientele to grow. But also people have to be willing to grow and willing to give grace when growth is slow.
As a former Lonely Young Man, I promise that you can be whatever shape, size, etc. of person and as long as you are well groomed, kind, honest, empathetic, interesting, and funny, you will find love. Drop the toxic masculinity.

In other words, the opposite of the manosphere's advice.

This is what they tell us in academia. I just gave a talk this week on work I did during my thesis in 2015-2020 and how that connected to work since, and folks were like "this is a very cool body of work I did not know about" (though I'm at a conference in Canada, so maybe they're being nice)
One thing I’ve learned from watching and reporting on how the news ecosystem works on YouTube and other social media platforms is that you can and probably should just repeat your same reporting over and over again to make it really stick

I’d like to show zoomers old gaming magazines which were like HOLY LIVING FUCK WE JUST PLAYED MARIO 64 FOR THE FIRST TIME AND MARIO CAN GO BACKWARDS, FORWARDS, *AND* SIDEWAYS.
i simply cannot imagine that

i don't think i even had a hundred gigs of HARD DRIVE SPACE until the mid 00s

was that even theoretically possible back then? obviously not with consumer hardware, but maybe a supercomputer cluster, i guess?

I am supposed to be in Montreal right now for an applied mathematics conference on spectral and high order methods, and I did think it was weird that my flight was just straight up cancelled despite the fact that the weather in Montreal is improving, but also there were no flights leaving EWR at all
very interesting thing just happened: EWR had a complete ground stop due to “thunderstorms” despite no storms in a 200 mile radius. The only flight to leave from EWR in that window? Air Force One.

sure looks like Donald Trump just shut down EWR for 4 hours so he could watch a soccer game!

I've shared this article with a number of friends because of how much I enjoyed the update and the original post. While my wife and I didn't commit in New Years Resolution fashion, we are trying to host people more now that we can afford a slightly bigger space and it's been amazing
Six months in, an update on how our resolution to host dinner every Saturday is going, including details on how many people we’ve had over, what we’ve cooked, and how for all the hard shit of this year, I haven’t been lonely once.
