also you do not have to think like a political operative, you aren't one and honestly most political operatives are wrong about stuff, just care about what you care about and care loudly
this is a good example of the attitude that has led democrats down the road to disaster. it rests on the belief that public opinion cannot be shaped or mobilized or moved, only reacted to

Notably, the first times Section 31 shows up in DS9, *this is not true!* Bashir is given a very clear position as our protagonist to express real, genuine moral repugnance and the show is deeply ambiguous and even straight up doubtful that what Section 31 does is good or even effective.
Hey uh I have no creative power in Star Trek anymore so this means nothing, but I 100% object to the head of the franchise Alex Kurtzman justifying a Space C.I.A. for the Federation to exist.

Remember the right-wing plot to sabotage Jimmy Carter’s re-election by urging Iran to hold American hostages longer? You don’t? It’s a shocking example of the American right’s treachery that more people should know about. (Gift link to 2023 NYT story.)

fwiw I think Trump is sui generis in some ways but not in the ways some people (esp centrists) want him to be. The bigotry, fascism, etc, that’s all cooked into the GOP now. The charisma that people respond to, the humor, etc, the GOP doesn’t have anyone else with that juice.
But this emerging picture out of Nevada isn’t “The Democratic Party failed to address the needs of the working class and voters rejected them,” it looks more like “Trump is sui generis and none of his electoral results are generalizable to his party.”

I think this is right. Also, if anyone is looking for someone to blame, it should be focused on the people who looked exactly at what Trump was selling and said "yes."
I am going to say this once: based on what we know now, there’s no “one weird trick” that would have won the presidency. There just isn’t. This was a massive shift and massive shifts have many fathers.

Of the many things that enrage me about the Supreme Court’s death penalty docket is its bloodlessness. You shouldn’t be able to order a death without saying anything. You should have to justify what you’re doing, or fail spectacularly while trying. You should have to sign your name to this shit.
SCOTUS won't stay the execution of Marcellus Williams. The three liberals dissent.

We kidnapped a dean, and within a year or so a number of our protest leaders declared war on the US government and started blowing things up, and though they claim they were nice and only bombed buildings, they wanted to kill people until their friends blew themselves up.

But KIDS THESE DAYS!!!

What's cool about looking back at the history of college protests is that 19 year old students have been right about every single American war, and the esteemed Harvard educated opinion writers at the New York Times have been wrong about every single American war.

Court rules 6-3 that homeless people have a constitutional obligation not to exist, with Thomas and Alito concurring separately to point out that traditionally people froze to death and ongoing homelessness is a function of expanding into “traditionally Spaniard regions”
Supreme Court justices expressed concern on Monday about punishing homeless people for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go while also struggling with how to ensure local and state leaders have the flexibility to deal with the growing number of unhoused individuals nationwide.
Supreme Court divided over homeless ban and rights of the unhoused
The decision in an Oregon homelessness case, to be released in June, could be the most far-reaching judgment on the rights of the unhoused in decades.
