yeah it's basically used as a synonym for stern, humorless, inflexible (a cousin is "Puritan"), and then you just attach a bunch more vibes to that and boom you get "Calvinism"
At Wendy’s you can’t sub the chicken nuggets for an equivalent sandwich in their Biggie Bag combos. That’s Calvinism.
it came out when I was in HS and I definitely thought this until a few years later, when I had to sit back and think about it for a sec

does anyone else remember the way inception was sold as this super confusing movie? and that newspapers were printing visual guides on what the plot was? and then you saw the movie and it was actually really straight forward?

gotta respect the old mainline church library. A lost art. A hidden gem. Hasn’t been used in 40 years. “More than a carpenter” right next to Johnson’s “she who is”

Appreciated this vulnerable and bold reflection from a UCC pastor. Heard about it from @philipchristman.bsky.social on Substack.

I also consider certain kinds of Catholics liberal Protestants
i think disdain for the virgin birth is more of a liberal Protestant thing than a denominational thing

I mean the thing that's hilarious about this is how much it illustrates Joyce Carol Oates's point - he can't post about his own enjoyment of books, his own experience, he can only create an AD TELLING OTHER PEOPLE WHAT TO READ

I agree with this and it's interesting how easily this take's way of gauging the authenticity and truth of feminism parallels Christians gauging the authenticity of Christian faith with the categories of orthodoxy and heresy

What a great thread!
One thing I wish more people understood is that when you talk about American churches, you're talking about a category so large and diverse as to be almost meaningless.

the south koreanification of american (gender) politics
I talked to a conservative around my age (early 20s) and I found three underlying themes to his political ideology.
1. Deep anxiety at the growing economic independence and power of women.
2. Anger and frustration at economic problems like housing.
3. A need for a more hierarchical social order-

the Chick-fil-a-ification of everything
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.
They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.
If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."
🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.

Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

A thing I secretly wish evangelicals in my life knew about me is that I am really moved by certain hymns. But most have no frame of reference to even perceive this world of Christian music.
Like, I'm thumbing through the Hymnal and crying at McDonald's because of It Came Upon The Midnight Clear

Does anyone remember this movie?
True story, it was shot as an R-rated crime comedy called “Down and Under.” Test screenings went awful, so they added one scene of a talking CGI kangaroo, featured it heavily in commercials, and released a toned down version claiming it was a family film.

I just watched The Incredible Shrinking Wknd (2019), which is a time loop story, and was very moved
Ironically, I rented it a month ago and watched it within the last 2 hours of my rental period
