Something must be done about the media. There are so many things to be hopeful about but the media might swamp it all.
A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

Talented propaganda from CNN. They really squared the circle. Admin uncharacteristically good at giving quotes. Hard not to doom based on what effects it will have on elite and public opinion. If it half convinces you of their argument you might even think the plan will work.

I love this message. Something about the phrasing doesn't feel quite right though. I feel like I would rather have the "cold individualism"? There is something elevated about the line and I can't figure out what it is.
“We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”

as a hater its been annoying to discover that llms can be useful, but each interaction feels insidious. its a little demon you have to bully to stop it from pretending to be your friend

terrible thing to make available to the public
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

Only a matter of time until a UC Berkeley law professor writes a memo justifying torture, a brave Vanity Fair writer gets tortured to say whether it hurts, and we have a national discussion about whether certain people should be tortured for our safety.

1) sometimes I am, but usually as a partial defense of state socialism

2) certainly not, but a bit tricky to say the leaders aren't communist. Many of the good things about China and Vietnam can be attributed to The Communist tradition

3) Communism exists as a movement, not a state of affairs

the issue with all the explanations like this is you don't just need to explain why people think the economy is bad now, you need to explain why they thought it was ~great in 2019, when most of these explanations also applied

People seem to really like quote posting anything they disagree with on this topic.

But in any event, people were a lot less able to afford basic necessities during the biggest recession since the Great depression than they are now
*Looking at the last five decades of slashing social programs, hyperfinancialization, and the increasing inability of people to afford basic necessities*

It’s a mystery
Why do more respondents say the economy is worse now than they did during the volker shock? I think it's an interesting question and not really about how "good" the economy is

Pretending the bourgeoisie of Menlo Park are ordinary Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa is the kind of "class blind" Right wing propaganda we've come to expect from the yimby movement
A lot of times people assume that housing is unaffordable because BILLIONAIRES and CORPORATIONS. But frequently in California it’s because of ordinary mom dad grandma grandpa like these folks, who are protesting parking lots being turned into new low income housing

8/ A public service reminder:

This entire exercise is an absurd, imaginary world for legal experts.

That's because the truth is:

It's not an armed conflict.
The laws of war thus don't apply.

The more restrictive rules of human rights apply.
It's extrajudicial killing under that law.

This is all true but

1) under no definition are we currently at war with Venezuela under domestic US law

2) since we aren’t, the initial strike was just as much a murder as the follow up

The failure to understand this by a huge range of actors is really driving me up the wall.
If the Venezuelan sailors were enemy combatants, then the 2nd strike is a war crime.

If the Venezuelan sailors weren’t enemy combatants, then both strikes are criminal murder.

It’s that simple.

these fuckers are all cowards. "weight of legal opinion says..." you are a u.s. senator! have an opinion.

"they haven't released information..." what possible info could there be that would show that we're in a state of armed conflict with drug gangs?
Van Hollen: "It's either murder from the first strike if their whole theory is wrong, and I think the weight of the legal opinion is they've concocted this ridiculous legal theory. But even if you accept it, then it is a war crime. I do believe the secretary of defense should be held accountable"

Double tap strikes in Afghanistan? It's classified, we're looking into it, they could very well still be legitimate targets.

U.S. "rule of law" provides a swiss cheese defense against war crimes. only in an absolute freak accident, total system failure could leadership be guilty
and trump gets to keep doing the boat strikes! a perfect compromise.

Murdering innocent sailors? Legally murky, hasn't been tested in court. Double tap murder? Obviously illegal and coincidentally the Trump administration already stopped doing it

UK so weird. The unstoppable juggernaut in politics is the "racial abuse party". the party leader is now in a serious scandal for racial abuse as a kid.

they like treating things as scandals there and are unforgiving about them, but scandal causes? cant get enough of them
Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

It was years ago.

Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

Not in a hurtful way.

Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

Not with intent.

Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

Not genuine abuse.

"historically under-resourced communities" is such a shit term. are they adequately resourced today? was it just some oversight that caused the shortage?

anyone using the term either means oppressed or culturally deficient and the term exists to bring them together under one useless tent

My most firmly held political belief is that it should be illegal to refer to wet wipes as "flushable" considering the havoc they wreak on our sewer systems. It is entirely coincidental that Marxist-Leninism is the only way to achieve this.

They seem to be hooked to the idea that you can emphasize one thing by emphasizing your decision not to emphasize some other thing.

But actually they're just vice signaling to other elites.
The usual suspects are telling Dems that Epstein won’t win elections, get back to “affordability” and I think my head might explode. www.offmessage.net/p/force-a-re...
