In 1923, Adolf Hitler led a failed right-wing coup d'état. He was convicted of treason & sentenced to 5 years in prison. He argued that his actions were justified by a communist threat to Germany. He was treated leniently & released after only 9 months. In 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.

In the aftermath of January 6, 2021, the director of the Centre for the Study of Bible & Violence of Bristol Baptist College (UK) invited me to contribute an article for the Centre's blog offering my perspective as an American theologian & minister on what happened that day. This is what I wrote.
An alternative practice for American Christians whose consciences are troubled by the prospect of pledging allegiance to the flag or singing the national anthem: with head bowed and eyes closed, pray for the nation during the pledge or anthem — an act of true Christian patriotism.
