“Just ask yourself, would the BBC champion a presenter who was consistently asking robust questions about the effect of the recent Supreme Court judgment on trans rights?”
“When I was [at the BBC], at the height of Boris Johnson’s strength, that fear was ubiquitous. Scripts were sometimes written with a view not solely to their impartiality or truth, but the management of perception of impartiality from one side of the spectrum.“ @lewisgoodall.com

Such sad news. One of the greatest actors of all time. Ran. Harakiri. Kagemusha. Yojimbo. High and Low. The Human Condition trilogy. The Sword of Doom. If you’re not familiar with his body of work, some of the greatest films ever made await you. RIP, Tatsuya Nakadai, and thank you.
hearing reports out of Japan that Tatsuya Nakadai has passed away at 92. RIP to a legit legend.

One more reason to loathe genAI is that it has marred one of the internet’s purest pleasures: funny animal videos. There are so many REAL funny animal videos we could be sharing, but now I have to second guess something which might have been a reprieve in the wall of misery in case it’s a fake.

This week's free Patreon update is my Halloween wrap-up, looking back at my seasonal festivities amid what was a tough October. I hope the two big takeaways from this are:

1. Halloween is magic.
2. John Lees has the best legs in Scottish comics.

Well, it sure is a good thing that Chuck Schumer skilfully avoided making voters mad at Dems.
MSNBC reported Schumer's office felt that the longer that shutdown went on, the more likely it was that people would start to blame the Dems.

My kingdom for Democrats that don't govern out of fear. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The American people are far braver than their reps.

It's a unique take on horror comics and is a great commentary on the video nasty scare started by ridiculous individuals in the 1980s UK. His table number is in the link.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.

We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.

We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Every single Democratic senator that votes to cave on this should be immediately ejected from the party, and the national party should immediately start running primary candidates in their districts.

There is no bipartisanship possible with traitors and fascists. You either fight, or die.

I don’t have much of substance to add, but the Trump regime were grasping with “Democrats want to give all your healthcare money to immigrants and trans people!” Folding now is like saying, “You’re right, sorry we wanted to give all your healthcare money to immigrants and trans people!”

In terms of first time watches, Come and See. The viewing came from a desire to (re)watch the entire Letterboxd Top 20 that fell by the wayside as the year progressed. An emotionally devastating film that more than lives up to its formidable reputation.
What is the best movie not from this year that you’ve seen this year? Bonus points if you say why

Watched AFTER LIFE (1998) last night, and it floored me. It's a humanist fantasy-drama with a succinct and fascinating after-life scenario, which it uses to explore...Regular people. What matters to them. What matters to you? If you could only live in one memory forever, what would you choose?

The Gender Critical have moved the goal posts again.

It is now not enough for them to exclude trans people from single-sex spaces. They are now complaining about trans people existing in any space with them [even a public space].

They're not protecting women. They're eradicating trans people.
