Manifesting goals for 2026. I got to do some of the things I wanted this year. Let's keep that momentum going. Next year I will:
- Write for RogerEbert.com
- Serve in a FIPRESCI jury
- Write a new comic book
- Write for a new game project
Here's to new opportunities and friends in 2026.
Don't miss this one. It's sweet and heartwarming and devilishly funny from beginning to end.

All You Need Is Kill is a visual feast that entertained me simply by looking so gosh-darn amazing. As an adaptation, however, it could do with more meat on its bones. #filmsky #anime #allyouneediskill regionfree.net/all-you-need...
Review: All You Need Is Kill is a gorgeous sci-fi spectacle
★★★ | A visual feast that will entertain sci-fi fans, but far too short and superficial to separate itself from the other adaptations of the same material.

Repeat for European friends and readers. The Rip is on Netflix today.
The Rip is a smart thriller with great performances that nonetheless has me conflicted. It's hard to watch a cop film play it so straight in this day and age, no matter how well made it is. My thoughts in the link below. #therip #filmsky

Hi-Fi Rush is one of the most underappreciated games in the past couple of years. I'm so excited there's going to be a rocking physical media release finally.
Shall we start the new year off with this absolute beauty from @limitedrungames.com? Yes, yes we shall! Hi-Fi Rush has three physical editions, but this one is our fav 🎸❤️‍🔥

I initially didn't know what to make of Forestrike. For weeks, I found myself frustrated and annoyed. Then, slowly, I got better at it, and the gameplay revealed itself as a meditation on the importance of perseverance. #gaming @forestrike.bsky.social #cosmocover

Forestrike is a wild mix of genres and styles well worth your time
★★★★ | An initially frustrating puzzle-action-hybrid that quickly reveals itself as a revelatory meditation on perseverance, Forestrike is an odd anomaly worth experiencing.

I loved A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. If you're a fan of oddball buddy comedies full of heart set against the backdrop of slowly unfolding historic events, chances are you'll love it too. #gameofthrones #aknightofthesevenkingdoms

If Primate were funnier or more outlandish, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But it takes itself so seriously that I kept asking myself questions like "how does a monkey understand the concept of 911?", which spells death for any horror film. #filmsky regionfree.net/primate-revi...
Primate is a dire animal attack film without bite
★ | While the foundation is solid, Primate is a poorly written and unimaginative addition to a genre that has so much more to give.

Deadwood, especially with the perfect film that concluded things.

Good Place, which has no bad episodes.

And I remain on the small team of people who continue to champion GoT ending exactly as it was promised to end.
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

Rosemead Review – Lucy Liu will break your heart
OVERVIEW Rosemead is a 97-minute family thriller-drama, the feature debut of cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Eric Lin, based on a real-life story. Lucy Liu plays Irene, a Chinese immigrant and widower who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, while her teenage son Joe (Lawrence Shou), living with mental illness, drifts deeper into unsettling obsessions. As her health deteriorates, Irene is forced into impossible choices, trying to protect him before it is too late. It is a tragic, often tense story about a mother running out of time, doing everything she can out of love for her son.

I have no objections on the quality of the craft behind The Pitt, it's the content and style that bothers me. This type of melodrama thrives on seeing increasingly awful tragedies in the name of entertainment, and it rubs me the wrong way. #streaming #filmsky

I will say a strength I've noticed in my continuing path to better film literacy is the ability to say I don't get it or that I do but don't agree with it and still appreciate the art for what it is. Egotism isn't just exclusive to film illiteracy, but it's certainly a major byproduct.
Oh here’s one that I think is way undersung: finding a political moral in a movie doesn’t mean you’ve solved the movie and got an A+ and can now stop thinking about it. The same story can have all sorts of morals, even contradictory ones. Shifting perspective is the entire point of fiction.
I'll do one! A thing that signals film illiteracy: knowing just enough about movies to basic rhen patterns, then assuming a film is bad because ~you~ can spot the seams, they'll always be there if you look for them, and most people don't. You figuring out where they're headed doesn't mean anything.
