Genuinely overwhelmed that #OnSavageShores has been shortlisted for the Pen Hessell-Tiltman Prize. Supporting writers facing persecution and censorship, @englishpen.bsky.social’s work is sorely needed right now, & I’m honoured to be in such wonderful company. 🗃️ #history

Sickening rhetoric by Home Secretary. Denying access to human rights isn't "protecting the public". This is Labour further demonising those seeking asylum in language very reminiscent of the far right. Yes, some break the law, so should be prosecuted within the law. Removing rights is not the answer

In a crowded field, this might be the stupidest and most unworkable tech policy I’ve heard lately.
The British government admits it is now monitoring VPNs use by UK residents. Regulator Ofcom has contracted with an AI-powered surveillance service to detect the number of citizens using VPNs to evade the Online Safety Act.

The UK tech minister has said a VPN ban is on the table.
Exclusive: Ofcom is monitoring VPNs following Online Safety Act. Here's how
Ignoring VPNs risks creating ineffective laws, but tracking them threatens people's privacy

When you really need to listen to Indigenous peoples: “We can’t eat money… We want our lands free from agribusiness, oil exploration, illegal miners and illegal loggers.” An exemplar of #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs.

Always so lovely to hear from readers. Until it turns out they’re trying to sell you reviews in exchange for ‘tipping’.

How is it that healthcare decisions for trans people are influenced so heavily by cis people *with absolutely no relevant expertise, training or experience*?

In no other area of healthcare would this be tolerated. FOR GOOD REASON.

Very much enjoying listening to the lovely @drjoannepaul.bsky.social with @katecarp.bsky.social on @draftingthepast.bsky.social. And now I want to know what the best books were that she read on life-writing and writing biographies! 😊 🗃️

This, from an organisation that has previously denounced sex tests as "unscientific and unethical" and has prioritised inclusion above all, is profoundly depressing.

This is seriously where we are. Slurs, misinformation and hate speech as a ‘neutral’ position.
Love that anything that doesnt call me slurs or advocates for me to be pushed out of society as unwanted scum now counts as unduly biased

Cat’s out of the bag, I guess… no, I do not know how to pose for photos, and yes, it was HOT under the lights, hence my bright red face 😂 Was very lovely to see @carolinepennock.bsky.social and meet Elizabeth Baquedano, among other wonderful people who contributed to the show.
What a treat to see my friend @amyfuller.bsky.social at the launch of the major new BBC Arts documentary series, 'Civilisations: Rise and Fall', which is coming to BBC2 later this month. It's all still thoroughly embargoed, but apparently we're now allowed to officially admit that we're in it!

It is a low bar possibly, but seeing a politician win, especially a significant win, by galvanising disenfranchised voters on a platform of unity, compassion and hope, a platform which supported marginalised groups such as migrants and trans/non-binary individuals, feels pretty important right now.

Sad to say that (as far as I know) I’m the product of generations of extremely working-class English and Scottish people who never went anywhere. Do you suppose I can manage to get myself deported to Scotland when they break away and rejoin the EU?
Lucy White advocates deporting 4th generation British citizens to 'ancestral homelands' if guilty of serious crimes

"Whether he’s a 2nd gen, 3rd gen or 4th generation migrant, he’s proven that he cannot integrate into a civilised society"
