Can’t believe the whole country has to suffer through the return of Dickensian childhood diseases because the worst, most ignorant attention-demanders decided other people’s expertise makes them feel bad

Gods I'm a sentimental bastard. I listened to a reading of the Gettysburg Address by Barack Obama and teared up a little. It's truly one of the finest pieces of rhetoric ever delivered.

Thread.

Antisemitism isn't the belief that Judaism or Jewishness is evil. It's the believe that evil is Jewish.

That's how we can be Marxists and Rent-Seeking Capitalists in the exact same breath.
The important thing to understand about all of this is that all of the Third Reich's actions were undertaken *because* of their antisemitism. It was the core of their worldview. Their other genocidal projects existed *because* if their imagined war with an eternal Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy. /1
This is a case of being technically correct but in a way that is intended to obfuscate.

Jews were not the majority of victims by number, but in the particular animosity, organization and proportion of the population killed they and Roma dominate.

I don't know about life decisions so much as the simply reality that selling means selling out. At least to some extent.

It means taking meetings with people on the marketability of your work, on what changes need to be made to make it more marketable, etc...

Purity is poverty.

It's actually amazing how well trust in science has held up (scientists are still more trusted than every profession in the US except the military!) given the huge amount of money and effort that's been spent trying to delegitimize it.

'Last Dangerous Visions' finally came in the mail. The Foreword by Straczynski is very good at explaining and addressing Harlan Ellison's Bipolar disorder while not using it as an excuse for his behaviour.

a lot of people need to learn that just because you encounter something "tasteless" doesn't mean you have to engage with it and it especially doesn't mean you're the intended audience
The thing is like if we want to fight back against prudery and sex negativity we also have to stop referring to stuff as 'gooner art' and accept that nsfw shit that reads as 'for the male gaze' has as much a right to exist as your favourite yaoi

Sadenned to hear of the passing of Rebecca Heineman. I only met her briefly during the 2024 Nebula ceremony, but she made an impact. She is again reunited with her wife Jennell Jaquays on behalf of whom she accepted the Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award that day. RIP.

Remembering how Emma Watson was treated back then.
I feel like maybe it’s a function of everyone online being born in 2002 but I don’t think most people realize how openly and explicitly pedophilic american culture was until like… maybe 10 years ago
Someone found an mp3 of the creepy "Jailbait" song Olivia Nuzzi released when she was 16 🫣

Over on Threads there's discourse about some 28 year-old unschooled woman not knowing that Anne Frank died because her mother left the upsetting parts out of history when teaching her, and that would be an excellent example of why unschooling is frequently a fancy word for educational neglect.

The "I play music on the bus" of gyms.
I’m happy a gym has finally opened near me so I can lift again but I forgot how much waiting on a power rack for people who are filming themselves working out makes you wish physical assault was legal

Motherfucker YOU PROMOTED THIS! YOU HAD HIM ON YOUR PODCAST!
Joe Rogan and Theo Von slam DHS for using Von's image in a video promoting deportation:

"I was like, oh my God, what the fuck are they doing? That's not how you envision the government."

"They were making, like, deportation hype videos with trap beats and shit. What are we doing? It's idiocracy."

Given the nature of AI it's accurate to accuse Techbros of having a praise kink.

I don't need to elaborate.

Art is a series of conversations through time. AI can only mimic the conversations while praising you for using the product.
I want art thats made by people, because i want to connect with people. I don't care if that art is made for personal reasons or for a coca cola commercial, i want to see art and think about the person who made it. How they got here. why they became an artist. What inspires them.
idk.

If you want an example of a good, straight man Hollywood look into Rock Hudson.
An all-too-common mistake is inferring the sexuality of historical figures based on contemporary standards that didn’t apply back then. For example, in the 1970s it was normal for a cop, a biker, a Native American, a construction worker, and a cowboy to be friends. It didn’t mean they were gay.

Hey. Did anyone here attend the International Star Trek Convention in Washington, DC, January 1-4, 1976, or know one of its organizers?
An editor at the excellent @fanlore.org site is looking for info on the con.

I think the key things here are that it wasn't a secret, and that the tolerated norm of powerful men trading access to 18-24 year old women very easily slid into them trading access to children.
to me the truly disturbing thing about all the epstein shit is not so much who it comes out was part of it. it's that it is essentially something that shouldn't, conventional (among progressives too!) wisdom suggested, have been possible: an actual secret paedophile ring of the rich and powerful
