The plot of the comic book "A-ha", which a woman reads as part of the music video for "Take on Me" by the band A-ha, is that guys show up and beat the singer from the band A-ha to death with wrenches. That's what's inside the comic book. That's how it ends.

I hate to beat the dead horse that is the NYT here, and this isn’t even the Bad Reporter, but “adolescents who say their gender identity does not align with their sex at birth”? Who “say” that? Is there a risk of flim-flammery here I’m not aware of?

In his new book, Dr. @drkevinrmcclure.com "presents the thesis that higher education leaders often exploit the good will of faculty and staff by expecting them to view their work as a labor of love with unending reservoirs of devotion."

Revisit "Powers of Ten." Very curious exactly age you have to be on either side not to have this seared into your brain:

it is quite literally a global security issue, as the very rich are in some cases more powerful than entire governments
You can go after them on so many fronts that can even appeal to right wingers like national security; remember when Elon shut down Starlink for Ukraine because he had a call with Putin?

it’s true that a functional welfare state requires more of a contribution from society at large than just soaking the rich can provide, but that’s besides the point

soaking the rich is a goal unto itself

the main reason to go after the rich is that if you don’t the entire structure of your society is predicated on the whims of people who are entirely disconnected from ordinary life

billionaires are simply too dangerous to exist, and any budgetary stuff that comes out of it is just a bonus

Someone who’d known me for over a decade before coming out had a response that still has me processing it, 6 years later: they told me they’d never once seen me smile before.
This is what I try to help people understand. If you could see the way my daughter smiled and laughed for the FIRST TIME IN YEARS after she came out to us as trans, you would get it.
My father was quite transphobic, and was not convinced I was really trans at first. He thought it was a new manifestation of mental illness. But as time went on and he saw how much happier I was he's been completely convinced, and he's growing less skeptical abt other trans ppl over time.

I'm of the opinion that trans issues did not move almost any votes in 2024 and pinning Harris' loss on her being too permissive in regards to transgendered people completely misses the mark. Trump won despite all his "they're for they/them rhetoric," not because of it. 1/2
disregarding the point about gender stuff, i feel like this explains so much about why Helen Lewis seems to struggle how US politics works. the Democrats are not the Labour Party. there is no top-down whip by Obama

Trans people: well at least we’re on the team
Liberals: you’re not. sorry, but we have to protect the integrity of metaphorical sports
