Remember the Electricity Comm report under the Key govt that found we’d been overcharged billions for years & Brownlee shrugged & did nothing

Australia: let’s roll out so much rooftop solar you can have free power during the day
NZ: businesses are closing down because they can’t afford power so we’re building a one billion dollar fossil fuel terminal so we can keep not having free power

Folks may or may not know that I like to make creative adjustments to Bob Ross-style paintings, resulting in paintings like our friend Moby Duck.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what to put in the forest river painting, though. Taking suggestions.

Here’s the thing. Power bills in this country suck. The price keeps going up. It’s a financial burden on many households. Campaigning on actual measures that would lower those bills - forgetting entirely the benefits to the country - would win votes. An LPG terminal isn’t going to win votes.

ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

IT WAS THE ADDITIONAL ONE BILLION THAT MADE THEM STOP THE DUNEDIN HOSPITAL AND IREX.

No money for hospitals or the ferries, money to prop up fossil fuels.
Given all the really important shit that this government says we "can't afford" it's amazing what they manage to find money for.

Marc Daalder on why the new LNG terminal is likely to shape up as a bad financial and climate decision.

Examines Watts and Luxons facile talking points and takes them apart.

Should be material for Hipkins but will he use it?
Why the new LNG terminal could raise, not lower, your power bill
Analysis: Energy Minister Simon Watts is confident importing gas will lower power prices, but questions remain about the scheme and its costs.

We definitely need some calculations about how many solar panels + batteries the same amount could pay for

$?????? millions on a liquefied natural gas terminal that cuts against the actual economics of natural gas instead of just paying for everyone to switch to fucking electricity is probably peak Luxonism. Bad economics, bad infrastructure, bad decision.

I’m wondering if we can apply the principal in other ways. For example, instead of saying “Govt is imposing a new tax on everyone for a fossil fuel subsidy” can we say “Govt is imposing a levy on everyone for a donation to the fossil fuel industry industry”?

Wait, do we have to pay more for power after this ridiculous deal?
This year I’ll have to move into/heat one room of my house during winter to afford power bills - what will this do to the thousands of New Zealanders at or below the poverty line? (I know they don’t care but media should be asking.)

Uh…how about put the levy on fukn GAS being that it’s to pay for y’know…gas.
Why the fuck should I pay more for my electricity so someone else can an have cheap gas?

A quick addition: it seems to me that in the current international climate, building more 'in-house' power (solar, wind, etc) would give NZ greater independence. That energy independence could prove quite valuable down the road.

#NZpol What would have been helpful would have been a *comparison*, comparing building a new LNG installation with, say, installing new solar + wind + battery power.

With no comparison, this is just rolling out one ‘solution’, rather than that being the best option.

Some governments raise taxes to fund public health and education. Not Luxon. He is literally raising taxes to subsidise fossil fuels. He is putting a levy on our electricity bills to pay for his LNG import terminal.

It's baffling to me that in Aotearoa New Zealand, there's even the slightest chance of *any* sewerage going into the ocean ever. Like, ever.

There shouldn't be any chance at all that even in a case of a natural disaster, anything can get into waterways or the ocean.

🤦
