Science, nature. She/her. Mask the F up! 🇨🇦
Pinned
I've gained several followers recently, so I'll reintroduce myself (sort of). I'm "I" and I'm from the best coast of 🇨🇦 (PNW area for my 🇺🇸 friends). I post a lot about nature, science/medicine and art (esp. path art), some aviation, and tons of feline and humourous content...especially lately 🫠 1/2

1. If you were in 2 minds about whether to sign up for compensation: this is a sign.

2. Publishers, not authors, get half the payment in most cases. I sure hope they use the money to support human authors in the future & not just file it into the profit accounts…
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

Seems like he's doing quite well without a "mad" button, tbh.
But perhaps some disambiguation would be good in the long run.

I assume I'm not the first sending this to @maryrobinettekowal.com but I cannot help it.

THREAD.

A couple of years ago I went on a pilgrimage to the derelict moorland cottage where a vegetarian ex-butcher once lived with a bull he had adopted, named Scrunch.

You will find the story in the alt text...

There's a direct line between the vacuum created when most of the left walked away from the fight to keep everyone safe, and the rise of MAGA/MAHA.

Things are not ok - but once the left quit on us, the only explanations came from far-right oligarchs, and their establishment allies in public health.

Do you know why girls used to get married at 15?

Because they were forced to

They were “property”

They had no rights

They couldn’t vote, own a home or have a credit card

Just because we used to do it that way doesn’t make it right.

They were kids then & they’re kids now

Alice Wong was one of the few who actually left the world better than when she entered it. A lot of the obituaries are leaving out her work on Covid, her advocacy around masking, and her work on eSims for Gaza. I tried to capture some of that in a post on IG.

Anyone who works adjacent to clinical microbiology knows how quickly the resistance problem has gotten worse. We really need new antimicrobial drugs. (And better antimicrobial stewardship but that's another rant)
If you ask historians of medicine what keeps them up at night, many will not say a new plague or bioterrorism, they will answer, "antibiotic resistance."
