Canada has just lost measles elimination status. The U.S. will undoubtedly follow shortly.

Elimination means that there is no continuous spreading of measles within the country for a year or longer.

Canada and the U.S. have blown it, and it’s largely the fault of the anti-vaccination movement.

UPDATE: Canada has announced that it has lost its measles elimination status.

This is a direct result of the increase in anti-vax disinformation, which has caused large, sustained outbreaks in the country over the last year.

My kids have measles and my SNAP benefits were cut. But at least those cashiers at Walmart aren’t writing “they/them” on their name tags anymore.

Canada has lost its measles elimination status 😢 And with that, the only region of the world of eliminate measles - the Americas - goes with it

What is elimination and why does it matter?

Tl;dr: more work for already overstrained healthcare and public health systems

Losing elimination status is a sign that measles is a big problem again, bigger than just outbreak response as needed

The virus has taken root in the community, like a weed

And the unseen roots - all the cases that don't get reported and spread measles to others - keep measles going

The CMA is disappointed and deeply concerned that Canada has lost its #measles elimination status from the Pan American Health Organization. We echo the Public Health Agency of Canada: the measles vaccine is the best way to protect you and your family.

Let's work together to keep measles at bay.

Losing #measles elimination status as predicted is the result of vaccines being a victim of their incredible success. It quite sad that people will need to experience the suffering inflicted by an infection like measles in order to remember why elimination was remains something to strive for.
