The lack of elite accountability is destroying the country. There will be a reckoning, and Democrats need to decide, right now, what side of it they want to be on.
we need to bring the hammer down on wealthy and connected elites. it’s been desperately needed for a long time. regardless of party or politics.
Something the US needs to accept too is that without a large-scale correction imposing consequences on a large number of people, the crisis of governance here will continue indefinitely

Getting annoyed listening to charter school activists lie again and again that charter schools are public schools.

They are not.

They are publicly funded private schools that siphon money away from public schools and produce no better results.

Given what a shitshow this is, Schumer should resign as minority leader regardless of the outcome because he's clearly completely lost control of his own caucus

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

If you have a job that gives you an FSA instead of an HSA it's because they either hate you or think you're too stupid to notice the difference.
FSA is worse than HSA. They are not portable and the unused funds expire rather than roll over at the end of the year.

This only thing worse than a gov shutdown for 40 days is a shutdown that achieved nothing but pain and suffering for the people it was supposed to protect.

I just called my senators: hold the line.

The pain of being a historian is knowing that LBJ would have had all these losers [redacted] before they even know what hit them. Schumer's got to go.
SCOOP: Schumer was more involved than reported with the attempted cave on the government shutdown. The Gang of 8 Senate Dems had his approval & he was getting daily updates.
In Thursday's caucus meeting, the Gang claimed they had 10 votes to cave. The caucus went nuts, leading to the new proposal.
Why Does Schumer Keep Trying to Cave? - The American Prospect
Most commentators, including me, concluded that the Tuesday election victory saved Democrats from capitulating to Republican demands to pass a simple continuing resolution to re-open the government, i...

Two things:

1. I hate that the chronology proceeds right to left. It feels un-American.
2. Is the "Presidential Walk of Fame" literally just everyone who was president? Because the right is supposed to despise Wilson despite the racism.
I really think what’s needed here is more gold.

“Cities are good, people want to live in dense walkable neighborhoods, and urban governance should prioritize city residents’ quality of life over suburban drivers’ convenience” remains a genuinely radical political program in America.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that a big piece of Mamdani’s campaign was simply “cities are cool and lots of people enjoy living in them” which in and of itself dismantles alot of rightwing talking points

With socialism destroyed and no pesky regulations in the way, market forces will be free to organically generate the perfect governing system.
Like I’m not a proponent of a ground invasion but what is the theory here?

>various armed groups splinter and compete for power in a vacuum

I maintain that a 7-13 years dead FDR still would have outperformed the technically alive Adlai Stevenson.
Following this logic FDR was so good at winning presidencies they had to make a rule banning him from winning a fifth, even as he died months into his fourth therm.

Confirmed waiters at the Table of Success.
Wow, Cuomo and Adams just continue to suck.
Zohran Mamdani says on NY1 he didn't get a congratulatory call from either Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams last night.

He says he got a congratulatory call from Curtis Sliwa, though.

Before January, Mamdani needs to figure out who his Lucky Luciano is and destroy him.
