This is happening at a far faster pace than we anticipated in the episode. Extremely grim, very enraging

My Mom will be the one preserving all plots of General Hospital from about 1977 onward
Imagine a fahrenheit 451 thing. A few enclaves of people preserving civilization.

This guy remembers Shakespeare. This woman remembers Finnish folk tales. This guy knows how to make sushi.

They turn expectantly to your boomer parent. "What are you preserving?"

"Um. CRT bad"

I realize that this is partly inspired by the story of someone asking George Harrison “why did your production company invest in Life of Brian” “because I wanted to watch it”
If I suddenly were as wealthy as MacKenzie Scott I would a) give away as much of it as she is be similar lack of strings but b) save a little bit out to found a production company to make stupidly lavish historical series like Rome (HBO). Which then get given to PBS so everyone can watch

Year hell, I give more by percentage in a single MONTH and I bet a lot of you do too
Fascinating chart with one outlier: Warren Buffett.

At the low end, giving 0.06% of one's wealth is equivalent to:

Net worth -> Lifetime Giving
50K->$30
100K->$60
500K->$300
$1M->$600

Most folks give far more by % in a *single year*.

being a nondriver gives you an outsider view in American society, and one thing you notice is that we’ve made the very odd and not great decision to outsource our de facto national ID to state DMVs
Democrats should get behind a voter ID law that only goes into effect when 99.9% of the eligible population has a valid ID and automatically pauses when the number falls below that. The fact that Republicans would never accept this would make clear what the real point of voter ID laws is.

I realize I think of Tom Hagen first, but like Diane Keaton he had such a Man of Parts career after that. Took a long while to get to a Robert Duvall Type.

do you know what would help!!!!!!!! living in a society that lets people experiment with their gender without treating it like the most important thing in the world!!!!!!! letting people get it right or wrong without politicising their decisions!!!!!!! just being chilled about gender!!!!!! aaahhhhhh
"if they socially transition too early we think they can get locked onto a trajectory that may not have been the correct natural trajectory for them"

This is your regular reminder that the idea that Christianity is a thing uniform beliefs that everyone within “Western Civilization” believed and agreed on is a fiction that just ignores centuries of Christians killing each other and fighting literal wars over their different beliefs.

Just checking, it's now ok to flee your homeland, because you're afraid for your safety, and seek refuge in another Country?

Glad we've cleared that up. Let's hear no more about immigration and refugees then.

Unironically yes, LOWER DECKS is about how the response to the disappointments of the post-Cold War era and the complexity of the modern world should not be despair or cynicism but instead a recommitment to the original ideals of liberalism, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

It was pointed out to me that Stephen Miller didn’t appear in the story, which was true of another anti-Noem Fox News story from months ago where my first reaction was how do u write that story without mentioning Stephen’s name even once
This is worth reading, but read it with both your eyes open: it’s clearly coming from ICE’s Lyons, CPB’s Scott and Tom Homan to preserve their secret police while marginalizing their bureaucratic rivals

I'm not joking. The only reason that's not the statutory sentence is that US torture laws only apply to torture committed OUTSIDE the US; torture committed INSIDE the US isn't a separate crime
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
