This is how Powderhorn in South Minneapolis shows up on a zero-degree today—and every day—after peacefully capturing a nazi and dropping him at his hotel.

My non professional tip for adding Alt Text to an image is to pretend you want to show me something on your screen and you yell "Arnica, come see this!"

And I reply "Babe, I'm frying you homemade donuts, can you just DESCRIBE it to me?"

Whatever you would holler to me is the Alt text!

It can be easy to get stuck in an overthinking trap of wanting to do the “most needed” or “best suited to you” good.

Let it go, show up, open your hands, and give the help being asked for.
you don’t have to do everything, and you don’t have to do anything huge or drastic or violent or dangerous, but you must do *something*

Because the media does not know how to frame what is happening, they keep referring to regular Minnesotans as protesters. But there is very explicit training that so many people done to learn how to be a constitutional observer. People are bearing witness to kidnappings, with phones and whistles.
by @democraticwins.bsky.social CNN just aired a devastating compilation of all the times ICE brutally attacked Americans. Remember, Donald Trump sponsored this. This is done at his command.

"America's problems are solved problems. Just not here."

It feels like there's a zero-sum aspect to a lot of conversations around policy and implementation. It's not even letting perfect being the enemy of the good; sometimes things have to be *less bad* first, and that's fine. It's a process.
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

And honestly, I think in general this attack on my city shows a total lack of understanding the basic character of Minnesotans, underestimating our tenacity, stubbornness, resilience, communality, and absolute willingness to volunteer for shit and show up. The revolution has a Sign-Up Genius.
I'm at a coffee shop at the moment with a bunch of writer buds, and we just observed a large convoy of ICE vehicles pursued by a much larger convoy of volunteer observers honking their horns with wild abandon. If there's one thing Minnesotans do, it's show up for shit.

that's what pisses me off most about the "[latest trump evil thing] is just a distraction from [another evil trump thing]"

I think the US is, in many different ways, a very culturally individualistic (instead of collectivist) place. Having the self-awareness and humility to step aside from something and using connections/influence to elevate others is a necessary trait for any leader, especially those in public service.
but, and this is where people are really fucking up, once you have that realization, you have to GET THE FUCK OUT THE WAY AND LET MORE QUALIFIED PEOPLE TAKE OVER! Looking at you, Hakeem Jeffries/Chuck Schumer/Amy Klobuchar/so many others. If you're not going to meet the moment, step aside!!!

There was an AI "photo" of a protest from an impossible angle in Minneapolis, but the instant slop clue was regularly spaced people in white t-shirts.

In Minnesota. In January. At night.
I want to emphasize for people again: there's a bunch of AI stuff going around of people confronting ICE agents. It's fake. It's slop.

Verify before reposting.

Please also know that it's not "just" or "only" a neighborhood or even the cities proper. It's the surrounding cities, it's MY town, it's agents outside dismissal at my son's school, it's more agents than the total officers of both city's police forces combined.
I don’t know how to explain to all of you outside the Twin Cities metro how bleak it is to live here right now - and yet somehow I am even more certain of the goodness of my community than I ever have been.

It’s miserable trying to do any “How’re you doing?” small talk because everyone in the Twin Cities is on edge and sad.

So I’ve been asking if people want to hear a groaner joke, and they do, and being able to have a smile and laugh is such a balm.
