No. No. Absolutely fuck off. I refuse to accept this. Salience tuned too high! Salience tuned TOO HIGH!
So apparently I was right to shittalk m00t this week because it's been revealed that his boneheaded decision to establish /pol/ and subsequently ruin the website was allegedly born out of a one-on-one meeting with Jeffery Epstein.

I've had this same thought, and I think taking the next step in society is going to require a more aggressive stance towards fighting scams, and zero-sum money chases more generally.
I’m increasingly concerned how navigating the modern world requires ever more sophistication, and about the huge and growing segment of people left behind by it who get eaten alive by scams and propaganda

It's socially unacceptable to point out on this site that a huge amount of mutual aid requests that get circulated are outright scams.

I think we're living in a period of extreme social distrust of the government coming across the political spectrum and part of that is manifesting as displacing that social trust into appealing scams and schemes.
why is such a large percentage of activity in america outright scams

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (one of 7 Democrats who just voted to fund DHS) defends her stance.

Argues funding for ICE "is not the question." Instead, Senate Democrats have leverage for various demands.

What do you mean you see a lot of visualisations of one year of a person's online dating?

No you don't, that would be mad.
I see a lot of visualizations of one year of a person's online dating (a 21M from London in this case). Seems miserable. Is getting drunk in a bar or club making a comeback as a dating strategy? Source: buff.ly/ZvAbOdz

Anyway, sometimes there can be one single event that brings down a government. It's usually because they do something so cruel that the population, no matter their previous beliefs, simply will not stand for it.

What that has to do with the US right now, I'll guess we'll have to see.

Apologies for yet another Irish Revolution comparison: the Irish population was very much opposed to the Easter Rising in 1916 because downtown Dublin was destroyed for, seemingly, no purpose. Until the British executed James Connolly as he was dying of gangrene. He was strapped to a chair and shot.
There's another way to look at this. ICE is doing everything the military manual tells you not to do to civilian populations because it creates insurgencies where none existed before.

Also from a purely military perspective, an armed insurgency is a fucking dumb idea in a pretty culturally homogenous, infrastructurally developed and (in macro terms) high employment country. Nowhere to hide, no major source of recruits.
The thing about the “acktually armed resistance is the only way to revolution” reply guys is that the ones who aren’t feds have no plans for armed revolution: they just want an excuse to stay at home and jerk off while feeling morally superior to the people doing the actual work or resistance.

It is committing a nationalist fallacy to say “this is what America is.” America has no objective definition. It is, as Benedict Anderson says, an imagined community and *we* get to decide what defines it.

It should be clear why we should want to define it by its highest ideals.
I very much disagree with @whstancil.bsky.social on this - how are you going to oppose ICE and the Trump administration if you don't understand that this *is* indeed who you are as a nation and that what we're seeing today is the culmination of a long history of American violence? 1/
People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.

The single and explicit message of the 2024 election was that Americans were more interested in the promise of cheap and easy treats than democracy or the rule of law

This lesson has shaped the current state of the Democratic Party and it is why you are now mad at them

a year ago i wrote a story that went viral over here about how republicans could create a de facto national care ban for trans medicine

to stop it, democrats would have to hold the line in funding talks, and staff in congress told me they were unsure if they would

today, they stopped it
Will Democrats Let the GOP Gut Trans Health Care?
Donald Trump and Republicans may try to ban funding to companies that perform trans health care. Some fear Democrats won't stop them.

Unironically this would be greatest advancement for queer people since Obergefell
A very conservative coded opinion I’ve now done a complete 180 on is just: instead of spending money on useless “economic development” funds or permanent welfare the government should just directly hand out piles of cash to people in deprived areas to move somewhere there’s jobs.

the degree to which the mainstream press is just plainly terrified of ta-nehisi coates' moral clarity makes this basically proven imo
There was a similar flowering of Black American public intellectuals culminating in the 2016-2024 period, and I'd argue the anti-Woke backlash was in many ways a reaction to the threat this posed to the outclassed white punditocracy, for whom meritocracy and DEI hire was a way to disqualify them.
Just finished this right after having read @hofrench.bsky.social's Second Emancipation, and it convinced me that the African & African diaspora anti-colonial thinkers of the 1940-1975 period constituted one of the great intellectual movements in the history of humankind.

Second Enlightenment level.
