This is why I have a soft spot for left of center unionist and even loyalist voices in the Northern Ireland conflict because (especially in the context of the 60s/70s) there’s a real case for unionism grounded in democracy, human and women’s rights, and the material wellbeing of the poor.
Much of the South supported the Confederacy, but that only accentuates the heroism of those who remained loyal, despite their environment. A narrative of the “true” South being the heirs of the loyalists, not the Confederates, is exceptionally powerful at damaging the lost cause.

A very important point here: framing it as “the South” concedes that the Confederacy was a legitimate representation of the South, rather than an illegitimate attempt to separate to separate the South from the Union.
Excellent post - and this is how I begin every discussion with a potential Lost Causer, because once you separate their Southern culture (family ties, geographic roots, etc) from the argument, you can actually have a discussion without the “I have to defend the South” walls coming up.

Some of that money almost certainly goes to buy drugs that are sold in the impoverished communities these groups operate in. Guns too for all we know

It’s all a major part of why these groups continue to exist
To a large degree peace in Northern Ireland was and continues to be bought with cash on both the republican and loyalist sides

Money was a major consideration in the Provisionals move toward peace from 1992, with Gerry Adams US trip

re: roblox dude's interview crashout. the thing he wants to say but can't is "at scale, kids are gonna get hurt. that is the price for scale." the thing nobody wants to say out loud is "maybe scaling to a level where harm isn't manageable is bad, and scale should be contained"

Just finished a reread and wow does this one qualify

A decent man with an extraordinary memory is recruited to infiltrate Sinn Fein. I really don’t want to spoil anything further, this one is shocking even now.

I love the Dropkick Murphys because "Irish-American" + "gen X" + "punk rocker who's been at it for 30 years" should be the formula for the most racist guy alive but instead Ken Casey is constantly giving interviews where he's like "fascists are demons from hell and that's where they belong"

What terrifies me isn’t the man himself so much as going through the rest of my life with the knowledge of what this country will tolerate and what millions actively support.
JON KARL: What do you make of Pam Bondi saying she's gonna go after hate speech? A lot of your allies say hate speech is free speech

TRUMP: We'll probably go after people like you because you treat me so unfairly. You have a lot of hate in your hate. Maybe they'll have to go after you.

I got into online politics nearly 15 years ago because I hated his dad and every year vindicates me more than the last
Rand Paul: "People say, 'Oh, people have a right to say things.' Well, actually they don't necessarily have a right to say things. Many people have in their contract what we call a morals clause ... I think it is time for this to be a crackdown on people."

This is something that I think needs to be said more for the young people. This shit got worse. Google was more useful in 2006 than it is today. Meemaw and Peepaw regularly post shit on Facebook that would have got you banned from Newgrounds.
Silicon Valley also just doesn’t make good shit anymore and are mad they lost the deference that comes with a reputation for competence.

My theory is this is less about sexuality than swiping and ELO algorithms

OKCupid stuck around years longer than Tinder as a place to actually get laid but once it became swipe only it steadily dropped off
Nobody hooks up on the straight apps anymore really, that whole era is so dead.

Grindr of course, lives on in our hearts
2010-2015 was a weird time when the Internet was a means to end (having fun), instead of a space that consumed your identity and kept you inside.

Their brains are cooked bc coolness is the one thing they value that can't be straightforwardly purchased with money or power, they're basically at odds

When the rich and powerful took over Burning Man it went from a cool thing to a punchline about how no amount of sex and drugs will make you cool!
Sometimes I think the fake influencer economy has cooked everyone’s brains, including the richest man on earth. Just because you aren’t cool doesn’t mean you don’t control actual capital and enjoy the benefits of a legal and social system that ensures that capital and power will accrue to you.
....what?

Oh fuck off BBC, stop doing paramilitary thugs' PR for them.

The UDA barely touched Republican paramilitaries during The Troubles - they killed a grant total of 11 of them in 25 years. They killed three times as many *other Loyalist* paramilitaries, and *twenty* times as many random civilians.

say what you will about the state of US politics, it's sort of bleak that centrist liberals in the US are more capable of standing up for trans people than what is supposed to be a left-socialist/populist party
My last hope for Your Party goes up in smoke as Zarah Sultana ‘welcomes’ Mark Serwotka.

His wife founded a Woman’s Place UK, a TERF group constantly trying to rollback trans people’s freedoms and he even wrote this lovely piece calling for ‘respectful discussion’ about our rights: archive.ph/iPb0L
