not exactly what the woman said, but same energy. the soliloquy this is from had me bawling at the time
now, i don't do this, i'm just much too shy around people i don't know and don't check in enough with the people i do. but as an ideal to aspire to? gotta be my lodestar
fucking thank you.
I do not respect or believe in the continuance of any cultural practice that is fundamentally in violation of intrinsic human rights. I don't care who started it; I don't care who's doing it. I am in this way completely evenhanded.

If to be traditionally and authentically African is to violate fundamental human rights, then traditional African practices must be ended and they must invent something else. The concept of authenticity does not supersede intrinsic rights.

These are basically people advocating for a worse world, and they think that we're not allowed to say anything about it because of, yes, a pervasive amount of self-abasement in our own culture. We have to stand by fundamental human rights and human values, even if it's new or novel.
The author here persuasively asserts a tension between liberalism and traditional African modes of thinking. I remain unconvinced, however, to prefer a world where liberalism yields to traditional thought rather than the other way around.

Mamdani’s message is as American as apple pie, and that’s why he drives reactionaries of many different political stripes crazy.
Mamdani: Where else can you hear the sound of the steel pan, savor the smell of sancocho, and pay $9 for coffee on the same block? Where else could a Muslim kid like me grow up eating bagels and lox every Sunday?

Main, if a white person wrote about a generic 'African thought' in this kind of way, that'd be taken as doing a Curtis Yarvin and it'd be right. Africa is the second largest continent in the world, there is no monolith to thus describe.
For instance, in a society where each community decides who counts as a person, one shudders to imagine what level of personhood queer people may receive.

Democrats’ national theme:

“Corruption is unlawful, it’s personally disgusting, it takes money out of your pocket, and we’re treating every incident of it like an attack on the public interest”

Probably a powerful message?
I was wondering what Mamdani's first executive order would be, and I'm not disappointed by this.

He has wiped off the books EVERY Eric Adams executive order issued on or after September 26, 2024, the day Adams was indicted on federal bribery charges.

Reflexively pro-Israel donors and groups managed to get out way, way over their skis trying to crush opposition to Israel on college campuses (in addition to legit antisemitism that was mixed in with it).

Siding with them totally was part of the NYT's attempt to placate the American right wing.

part of the genius of his major campaign ideas is that they can be deployed fairly quickly as tangible deliverables. they can help him build trust with voters as someone who does what he says he will do. and trust goes a long way!
I think people are underestimating how much Mamdani, even more so than your average elected leftist, see it as his top priority to not be seen as a failed mayor. He is not going to be another Brandon Johnson, I’d wager

A remarkable trend that will come as a shock to you if your only info about NYC is from this Fox News.

so old i remember an entire summer where obama had to distance himself from jeremiah wright. i dont think the msm has ever once asked trump or vance about yarvin.
Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.

I'm entirely serious about this: until you internalize the view that urban America is Real America, you won't see the urgency of structural reform of an American government whose fundamental structures so disadvantage its population centers—the great engines of its prosperity, progress, & culture.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not
