This means Rick Scott does not believe there should be any of what the ACA calls "essential health benefits" — things an insurance company *has* to cover

blacksky.community/profile/did:...
Says all plans would have to cover pre-existing conditions. But if states set the rules, some might choose not to require coverage for thinks like pregnancy, or prescription drugs some people need to survive, and so on…(as it was pre-ACA)

More than just 8 but less than all of the Senate Dems

Whole point of this maneuver being we don’t know who exactly it was that supported it. Yes, “institutionalists,” tell me more about how the filibuster promotes good governance

I kind of think both Takes are right here. All us sickos remember, but a lot of people who aren't quite so engaged are probably just left with the vague impression that the Democrats are feckless

it's so dumb to talk about bipartisanship as an end unto itself because political parties are not supposed to want to work with each other if they can help it. you're not supposed to wanna work with your opponents. you want to accomplish as much of your agenda as possible

The real win condition here was ‘force them to nuke the filibuster’. Not doing that, I’m not sure what they gained here; in the meantime the idea that the Dems could end the shutdown (and are this culpable for it) and could have done so at anytime for nothing (since that’s what they got) spreads.
It's obviously not Democrats' fault, but the Democrats are eating a loss because after making the whole news cycle about how they were going to save the ACA, they now won't

The GOP just hates successful direct to consumer businesses, first was the de minimus exception for shipping, now they kill hemp derived THC, what will they kill next
But like actually where did the political will to take the hemp industry out back and shoot it come from

In "Trust me, I'm Lying," Ryan Holiday talked about how online-only media outlets (then 2010s blogging) dishonestly edited headlines and content post-hoc, often reactively in response to outrage or being caught getting things wrong. its really incredible that this is MSM now

The Democrats erred by not forcing Republicans to nuke the filibuster. But there was nothing Democrats could have done to get the ACA subsidies extended, because Republicans control all three branches and strongly believe that only rich people should have access to decent healthcare
You can criticize Senate Democrats for capitulating but Donald Trump and Republicans are the ones destroying the ACA.

NEW: President Trump's pardon of his alleged 2020 co-conspirators was less about shielding them from past crimes, his adversaries say, than about signaling to others that he has their back if he needs them again in 2026 or 2028.

“The richest man in the world, who has no interiority and no ability to understand art, also owns a giant machine for creating and distributing an endless amount of soulless simulacra and kitsch” is basically the plot of like a Kundera novel or possibly a Fellini film and that’s very funny to me

just realized this may also be a good laugh for @merovingians.bsky.social
So this reminds me of one of my favourite WTF moments in heritage bureaucracy, which was the 2018 archaeological excavations just outside the chapel of St Peter at the Tower of London. nobody could decide who, apart from the king, could legally sign off on the project
…so there isn’t some department that is empowered to deal with this stuff that can just override the inevitable objections, I guess? rough, if so

*whispers* we were supposed to impeach Dubya
The single biggest question in American law today is:

Are lies a get-out-of-laws-free card? Can the government simply lie to grant itself new powers? And is everyone else under an obligation to act as if obvious lies are true, or at minimum, that they might have merit and deserve respect?

weird to find ppl bellyaching about win conditions and such. I think it’s pretty clear that “win” here meant forcing the abandonment of the filibuster and refusal to vote for this government, making them own their disaster in toto. That’s how we’ve been talking about this for weeks, I thought?

The next president, if we have one, needs to learn that the penalty for treason is death and that you can't pardon a corpse
Trump just celebrated Schumer's cave by pardoning 75+ co-conspirators including Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and Sidney Powell, for their efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

what the fuck was the point of all this if you don't even secure a serious deal? and if you can't secure a serious deal, why is there even talk of negotiating. you are not the majority ffs!

I think we should make it legal and easy to build starter homes like townhouses and condominium apartments in more places so people can get on the homeownership ladder affordable without having to sign up for 50 year loans they’ll probably never pay off.
Oh good. the 50-year mortgage. That should solve everything.

not a catholic, not really a fan either, but, someone needs to drill it into these assholes that this thing they signed up for isn’t actually supposed to be “my political beliefs plus some nice artwork and music” nor “carte blanche for every depravity I’ve ever contemplated or wanted to commit”
state of the trad catholic discourse on the other site is debating whether undocumented immigrants should be able to receive the Eucharist if you were wondering how that was going
